Der Sänger, Gitarrist und Komponist Phil Everly von den US-amerikanischen Everly Brothers ist gestorben
Der am 19. Januar 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, geborene Phil Everly (Bild), die eine Hälfte des US-amerikanischen Gitarren- und Gesangsduos The Everly Brothers, ist am 3. Januar 2014 in Burbank, Los Angeles County, gestorben. Die Everly Brothers zählen zu den erfolg- und einflussreichsten Duos der gesamten bisherigen Pop- und Rock-Geschichte.

Mit seinem Bruder Don feierte Phil Ende der 50er- und Anfang der 60er-Jahre zahlreiche Erfolge. Zu ihren Hits gehören unter anderem «Wake Up Little Susie», «Bye Bye Love», «When Will I Be Loved», «All I Have to Do Is Dream», «Crying in the rain», «Love hurts» oder «Til I kissed you».

Die Everly Brothers beeinflussten berühmte Gruppen wie die Beatles, die Hollies, Simon & Garfunkel und die Beach Boys. Das «Rolling Stone Magazine» nannte sie «das wichtigste Gesangsduo des Rock». «Wir schulden diesen Typen alles. Sie haben alles angefangen», sagte Dylan einst über das Rock-Duo. Die Beatles bezeichneten sich einmal als «die englischen Everly Brothers».
Träne im Regen
Meine Generation würde jetzt sagen: A-ha, dieses Lied haben die Everly Brothers in ihrer Spätphase auch noch gecovert, so wie sich Johnny Cash beim Fundus jüngerer Musiker bediente! Doch damit liegen wir falsch! «Crying In The Rain» ist zwar bekannter in der Version von A-ha, erfunden haben’s aber die Everly Brothers, und das schon 1962. A-ha haben die schöne Ballade in unseren Breitengraden einfach bekannter gemacht. Eine Träne im Regen, die vergiessen wir auch heute.

Vor zehn Jahren waren sie in Deutschland noch einmal gemeinsam zu erleben: Simon & Garfunkel holten sie auf die Bühne, wo sie, etwas breiter geworden, aber mit unvermindertem Schwung, drei ihrer Smash-Hits zum Besten gaben – der Kölner Saal tobte. Seltsam konserviert mutet die Musik der Everly Brothers schon seit Ewigkeiten an. Nun, bei der Nachricht von Phils Tod, der ein immenser Verlust für die Popmusik ist, weht sie noch einmal zu uns herüber, brüderlich intoniert in einer unschuldigeren, vielleicht auch besseren Zeit.

They were also models for the next generations of rock vocal harmonies for the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Simon and Garfunkel and many others who recorded their songs and tried to emulate their precise, ringing vocal alchemy.

Over the next decade the clean-cut duo influenced a generation of musicians on both sides of the Atlantic and proved that the vocal cords of family members are the surest route to stunning close harmonies.

Vor einer Woche starb Phil Everly. Kurz vor seinem Tod erschien «Foreverly», eine tolle Tribut-Platte von Norah Jones und Billie Joe Armstrong, die an die Klasse der Everly Brothers erinnert.
