DER US-AMERIKANISCHE POP- UND JAZZSÄNGER SOWIE SCHAUSPIELER JACK JONES IST GESTORBEN

Der am 14. Januar 1938 in Los Angeles geborene US-amerikanische Pop- und Jazzsänger und Schauspieler Jack Jones (Bild) ist am 23. Oktober 2024 in Rancho Mirage (Kalifornien) gestorben. In den «Hot 100» des «Billboard Magazins» stieg sein Lied «Lollipops and Roses» bis Platz 60 auf und wurde mit dem Grammy ausgezeichnet. Seinen grössten Erfolg hatte Jones Ende 1963 mit dem von Burt Bacharach komponierten Titel «Wives and Lovers», der bei «Billboard» Platz 14 erreichte und 14 Wochen lang in den «Hot 100» war. Auch dieser Titel erhielt einen Grammy.

Bis 1969 brachte Jack Jones 36 Singles und über zehn Langspielplatten heraus, von den sich 18 Singles in den «Hot 100» platzieren konnten. Neben seiner Sängerkarriere hatte er auch zahlreiche Engagements als Musicalinterpret und Schauspieler. Ausser in seinen Bühnenrollen war Jones auch in zahlreichen Fernsehproduktionen zu sehen. Auch in Europa wurde er durch die Titelmelodie der Fernsehserie «Love Boat» bekannt. (*)

Jack Jones, a crooner who beguiled concert fans and stage, screen and television audiences for decades with romantic ballads and gentle jazz tunes that even in large venues often achieved the intimacy of his celebrated nightclub performances, died on Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 86.

Jack Jones, Grammy-Winning Singer of The Love Boat Theme Song, Dies at 86

Jones was perhaps most famously known as the voice behind The «Love Boat» theme song, beginning in 1977. «Love, exciting and new. Come aboard. We’re expecting you», he sang on the track from the Aaron Spelling-produced series. He also sang the theme song for the 1968 movie «Anzio» with «This World Is Yours» and was behind the title song for the 1963 film «Love with the Proper Stranger».

Over the years, he found hits with songs like «Lollipops and Roses,» «Wives and Lovers» and «The Impossible Dream.» He also won two Grammy Awards and earned five nominations, and made memorable cameos in movies like «Airplane II: The Sequel» (1982) and «American Hustle» (2013).

Jones was born into a showbiz family. His mother, Irene Hervey, was an Emmy-nominated actress who spent more than 50 years in film and on television. His father, tenor Allan Jones, portrayed the romantic male lead in «Show Boat» (1936) and in the Marx Brothers’ «A Night at the Opera» (1935) and «A Day at the Races» (1937), and he managed a hit song of his own with «The Donkey Serenade.»
