Die am 3. Februar 1947 in Astoria (Queens, New York City) als Melanie Anne Safka geborene US-amerikanische Sängerin und Songwriterin Melanie (Bild) ist am 23. Januar 2024 in Nashville (Tennessee) gestorben. Sie wurde 1969 durch ihren Auftritt beim Woodstock-Festival bekannt. Melanie «etablierte sich nachdrücklich mit genial-schlichten Songs und unverwechselbarem Timbre im Folk-Pop-Genre» (Taurus Press Verlag). Mit «Brand New Key» gelang ihr zum Jahreswechsel 1971/72 ein Nummer-eins-Hit in den USA. In Grossbritannien, Deutschland und der Schweiz hatte sie 1970 einen Top-Hit mit der Coverversion des Rolling-Stones-Songs «Ruby Tuesday». Ihr weltweit erfolgreichster Hit war «What Have They Done to My Song, Ma».

Melanie, ‘Brand New Key’ Singer Who Played Woodstock, Dies at 76

Melanie, the husky-voiced singer and songwriter who was one of the surprise stars of the Woodstock music festival in 1969 and two years later had a No. 1 single with the disarmingly childlike «Brand New Key,» died on Tuesday. She was 76.

Melanie, born Melanie Safka in 1947, was only 22 but already a presence on the New York folk scene when she appeared at Woodstock. She was one of only three women who performed unaccompanied at the festival — and, as she later recalled, she was petrified at the thought of performing in front of a crowd vastly bigger than the coffeehouse audiences she was used to.
