Der am 10. September 1940 in Los Angeles geborene US-amerikanische Vibrafonist, Sänger, Komponist, Arrangeur und Musikproduzent Roy Ayers (Bild) ist am 4. März 2025 in New York City gestorben. Er zählte zu den wichtigsten Vertretern des Jazzfunk. In den 1960er-Jahren wurde Ayers als Jazzmusiker insbesondere für seine Soul-Jazz-Stücke bekannt. In den 1970ern konzentrierte er sich vermehrt auf Funk und arbeitete nun auch als Sänger und Komponist. 1973 verantwortete er den Soundtrack zum Blaxploitation-Film «Coffy» mit Pam Grier. He helped introduce a funkier strain of the music in the 1970s. He also had an impact on hip-hop: His “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” has been sampled nearly 200 times.

In addition to being one of the acknowledged masters of the jazz vibraphone, Mr. Ayers was a leader in the movement that added electric instruments, rock and R&B rhythms, and a more soulful feel to jazz. He was also one of the more commercially successful jazz musicians of his generation.

Roy Ayers, “Godfather Of Neo Soul,” Dead At 84

Roy Ayers was a vibraphonist, record producer, and composer who was often sampled and called “The Godfather of Neo Soul.” He was born in 1940 in Los Angeles. His father played trombone and his mother played piano, and he was given his first pair of vibraphone mallets by Lionel Hampton at the age of five. He fronted a band called the Latin Lyrics in high school and sang in the church choir. In 1962, he began recording as a bebop sideman and released his debut album the following year, West Coast Vibes, with the saxophonist Curtis Amy.

He started his own band called Roy Ayers Ubiquity in the early ’70s and did the critically acclaimed soundtrack for Jack Hill’s 1973 blaxploitation movie Coffy. In 1976, he unveiled the LP Everybody Loves The Sunshine, which featured his hit of the same title as well as the beloved disco track “Brother Green (The Disco King).”

By 1970, Ayers had formed his own group under the name Roy Ayers Ubiquity, and in 1973 he found wider fame after soundtracking Jack Hill’s blaxploitation film Coffy, starring Pam Grier. Roy Ayers Ubiquity experienced years of chart success in the latter half of the decade, starting with 1975’s Mystic Voyage, which hit No. 13 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and 1976’s Everybody Loves the Sunshine, which reached No. 10 on the same chart, and No. 51 on the Billboard 200.

The musician’s songs have been sampled by everyone from Mary J. Blige and Common to Tyler, the Creator and Kanye West, and he collaborated with musicians including the Roots, Guru, Fela Kuti and Rick James.

«It’s wonderful, the desire young people express for my music,» Ayers told Dummy in 2016. «It’s wonderful because I’m still growing in popularity.“

That lifeline continued through samples, but also studio collaborations with new generations of R&B and hip-hop musicians like Alicia Keys, The Roots, Gang Starr’s Guru and Tyler, The Creator.

Roy Ayers also appeared on Erykah Badu’s 2000 album Mama’s Gun, his vibraphone softly skating across «Cleva.» His touch is light and decorative, but never showy — he responds to a song about natural beauty with his own. Badu herself has called Ayers the king of neo-soul, crediting him with the soft-focus, yet meticulous, fusion of mellow sounds.

Die Ambivalenz des Sonnenscheins

Sein, wie man heute gern sagt, Signatursong, ist der Inbegriff von ausgeruhtem Funk-Jazz. Wenn je noch jemand fragen sollte, wie man Zurückgelehntheit in Musik übersetzt, dann wäre „Everybody Loves The Sunshine“, zumal in der trockenen Studio-Version auf dem gleichnamigen Album von 1976, ein Paradebeispiel: schwebender, auch gern als kosmisch bezeichneter Sound eines elektronisch verfremdeten Vibraphons, spärliches Schlagzeug, das im Gegensatz zu Eskapaden im Jazztrio oder in der Rockmusik ultrabescheiden klingt, frei atmende Basslinien und ein Gesang, den man sich tatsächlich nur hinter Sonnenbrillengläsern vorstellen kann.

Lichtgestalt des entspannten Jazzfunks

Er war eine Art Sonnenkönig. Von seiner Musik her, in der selbst die wildesten Tanznummern von einer wundersamen Entspanntheit waren, wie auch von seinem sanften Gemüt her. „Everybody Loves the Sunshine“, sein berühmtester Song, der mit der markanten Zwischenzeile „Just bees and things and flowers“ kitzelt, versetzt instantan ins sonnige Kalifornien. 1976 aufgenommen und von unzähligen Kollegen wie Neo-Soul-Superstar D’Angelo gecovert, wurde er zu einer Art Evergreen in Nebelländern wie Großbritannien. Von London ging Ende der Achtziger auch die große Renaissance der unverschämt entspannten Roy-Ayers-Musik aus. DJs und Musiker der Acid-Jazz-Ära trugen die delikaten Grooves des Meisters an die nächste Generation weiter.
