ZUM TOD DES US-AMERIKANISCHEN ROCK’N’ROLL- UND COUNTRY-PIANISTEN UND -SÄNGERS JERRY LEE LEWIS
Der am 29. September 1935 in Ferriday (Louisiana) geborene US-amerikanische Rock-'n'-Roll- und Country-Musiker und -Sänger Jerry Lee Lewis (Bild) ist am 28. Oktober 2022 in DeSoto County (Mississippi) gestorben. (*)

Jerry Lee Lewis, perhaps the last true, great icon of the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, whose marriage of blues, gospel, country, honky-tonk and raw, pounding stage performances so threatened a young Elvis Presley that it made him cry, has died.
He was there at the beginning, with Elvis, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, and the rest, and watched them fade away one by one till it was him alone to bear witness, and sing of the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
«Who would have thought,» he said, near the end of his days, «it would be me?»
Goodness gracious, great balls of fire!

The hell-raising, larger-than-life rock ‘n’ roll pioneer and latter-day country star
Lewis — an inaugural inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, a 2005 recipient of a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award and, at the age of 86, a 2022 inductee of the Country Music Hall of Fame — was a powerhouse keyboardist, mercurial vocalist and rampaging, unpredictable showman who could master virtually any song, be it rock ‘n’ roll, country, R&B, gospel or pop.

Rock ’n› roll’s first great wild man
Sam Philips, the founder of Sun Records — and the producer who also discovered Elvis, Howlin› Wolf, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison — called Lewis «the most talented man I ever worked with, black or white … one of the most talented human beings to walk God’s earth.» But almost as quickly as his star ascended, his career collapsed, after he married his 13-year-old cousin in 1958 — mere months after his first hit song was issued.

«I’ve lived my life to the fullest and I had a good time doin’ it.»
In October, Lewis was inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame but was unable to attend the ceremony because he was ill with the flu, according to a statement posted to his social media.
