ZUM TOD DES US-AMERIKANISCHEN SCHAUSPIELERS, REGISSEURS, FILMPRODUZENTEN, FESTIVALGRÜNDERS UND UMWELT-AKTIVISTEN ROBERT REDFORD
Der am 18. August 1936 in Santa Monica (Kalifornien) geborene US-amerikanische Schauspieler, Filmregisseur, Filmproduzent, Festivalgründer und Umwelt-Aktivist Robert Redford (Bild) ist am 16. September 2025 in Sundance (Utah) gestorben. Redford zählte seit den späten 1960er-Jahren zu den populärsten Hollywood-Schauspielern und war zwischen 1973 und 1976 der Filmstar mit den höchsten Einspielergebnissen an den Kinokassen. Zu seinen bekanntesten Filmen zählen «Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid», «The Sting», «All the President’s Men», «Out of Africa», «The Horse Whisperer». Als Regisseur inszenierte Redford neun Spielfilme, er wurde für sein Regiedebüt «Ordinary People» 1981 mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnet. 2002 erhielt er einen Ehrenoscar für sein Lebenswerk als Schauspieler, Filmemacher sowie als Gründer des Sundance Institutes, das seit Jahrzehnten das bedeutende Sundance Film Festival veranstaltet. Redford war auch als Umweltschützer aktiv und unterstützte unter anderem den Natural Resources Defense Council. (*)

Redford died in his sleep at his home outside Provo, Utah, his longtime publicist, Cindi Berger, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
The actor-producer-director, a four-time Academy Award nominee and honorary Oscar recipient, was one of the few truly iconic screen figures of the past half-century, the avatar of a certain kind of all-American ideal who nonetheless took a dyspeptic view of his country in several notable dramas including Downhill Racer (1969), The Candidate (1972), Three Days of the Stephen Galloway.

Jane Fonda says she «can’t stop crying» as she mourns the death of Robert Redford, her longtime screen partner and fellow environmental activist. The influential filmmaker-actor who founded the Sundance Institute died Tuesday at age 89.
«He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for,» Fonda said in a statement to The Times. She shared the screen with Redford in several films, including «The Chase» and «Barefoot in the Park.»

Inevitably, one word comes up when discussing Robert Redford: golden. Redford gleamed through more than 80 movies, many of them classics. His life included decades of activism and founding the Sundance Institute that profoundly shaped decades of independent film.
Fittingly, Redford’s history started in Los Angeles. His working-class family was the only white one on their mostly Mexican block. As a kid, Redford often misbehaved in school.

Auf die Frage, ob er in seinem Leben etwas bereue, antwortete er 2013 in einem Interview mit der Deutschen Presse-Agentur: «Nein, ich würde alles wieder so machen, auch die Fehler, die gehören dazu, das ist Teil des Lebensprozesses.»
Und so schrieb er als Schauspiel-Ikone Geschichte, denn er arbeitete sich von ganz unten hoch, er engagierte sich politisch für die nordamerikanischen Ureinwohnenden und ausserdem auch für den Umweltschutz. Zudem förderte er Independent-Filmschaffende und veranstaltete jährlich das «Sundance Film Festival». 2016 setzte er sich nach seiner langen Karriere zur Ruhe. Zum 80. Geburtstag behielt er aber noch sein Präsidium vom «Sundance Film Festival» bei und leistete so seinen jährlichen Beitrag an den Nachwuchs der Filmindustrie.
