ZUM TOD DES AUSTRALISCHEN ROCKMUSIKERS, SONGSCHREIBERS UND PRODUZENTEN GEORGE YOUNG

Der am 6. November 1946 in Glasgow (Schottland) geborene australische Rockmusiker, Songschreiber und Produzent George Young (Bild) ist am 22. Oktober 2017 gestorben. Er war der Bruder von Malcolm und Angus Young (AC/DC), für die er u.a. als Produzent arbeitete. Grosse Erfolge feierte George Young mit den Easybeats, der erfolgreichsten australischen Band der 1960er-Jahre, für die er als Co-Autor zahlreicher Songs wirkte. Young war massgebend beteiligt u.a. an den Welthits «Friday on My Mind», «Love Is in the Air» oder «Yesterday’s Hero».

George Young, a pioneer of Australian music as a member of The Easybeats and producer for AC/DC, the band fronted by his brothers Angus and Malcolm, has died aged 70.

He’s credited as a co-writer of the rock band’s international hit «Friday on My Mind,» which was covered by the likes of David Bowie and Gary Moore, and John Paul Young’s «Love Is in the Air,» which was introduced to a new generation of fans when an updated mix appeared prominently in Baz Luhrmann’s 1992 feature film Strictly Ballroom. In 2001 when APRA published its Top 30 Australian Songs, «Friday On My Mind» was declared No. 1 by a panel of 100 Australian writers, musicians and critics. The song reached No. 6 in the U.K. and No. 16 in the U.S.

The music publishing and recording house Alberts, which had both the Easybeats and AC/DC in its stable, reported Young’s death.

«It is with great sadness that Alberts acknowledge the passing of George Young,» it said. «A consummate songwriter, trailblazing producer, artist, mentor and extraordinary musician, George was above all else a gentleman who was unfailingly modest, charming, intelligent and loyal; a man with a wonderful sense of humour.

AC/DC-Produzent George Young ist tot

Nach der Auflösung der Easybeats im Jahr 1969 schrieb und produzierte George Young gemeinsam mit seinem Kollegen Harry Vanda weitere Lieder (…), gründete eine eigene Plattenfirma und steckte mit seinen Brüdern Malcolm und Angus die Köpfe zusammen, als sie 1973 AC/DC gründeten. Young produzierte nicht nur einige ihrer ersten großen Erfolge, darunter «High Voltage», «T.N.T.» und «Let There Be Rock», sondern spielte auch während der Aufnahmen Bass.

Er hatte seinen kleinen Brüdern die ersten Gitarrengriffe beigebracht und nach eigenen Erfolgen mit den Easybeats ihre erste Platte als AC/DC produziert.

Der Bruder der AC/DC-Gründer Malcolm und Angus Young sei im Alter von 70 Jahren gestorben, teilten die Band und seine Plattenfirma am Montag mit. «Mit schmerzendem Herzen müssen wir den Tod unseres geliebten Bruders und Mentors George Young verkünden», erklärte AC/DC. «Ohne seine Hilfe und Beratung hätte es kein AC/DC gegeben.»

Young habe sich als «Musiker, Songschreiber, Produzent, Berater und vieles, vieles mehr» verdient gemacht, hieß es weiter.
