DER US-AMERIKANISCHE FOLK-SÄNGER, SONGWRITER, MUSIKER UND KUNSTMALER BOB NEUWIRTH IST GESTORBEN
Der am 20. Juni 1939 in Akron (Ohio) geborene US-amerikanische Folk-Sänger, Songwriter, Musikproduzent und Kunstmaler Robert John Neuwirth (Bild) ist am 18. Mai 2022 in Santa Monica (Kalifornien) gestorben. Internationale Bedeutung erhielt er u.a. durch seine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Donovan und weiteren Grössen. Unter anderem wirkte er bei den Dylan-Filmen «Dont Look Back» und «Renaldo and Clara» mit. Neuwirth war Co-Autor des Songs «Mercedes Benz», den Janis Joplin weltbekannt machte, und er brachte Janis Joplin und Kris Kristofferson zusammen, was zu Joplins Welthit «Me and Bobby McGee» führte. Bob Neuwirth war Teil der legendären Rolling Thunder Revue.

Painter, road manager, sidekick, confidante, henchman, poet, underground cult hero, womanizer, party organizer, self-appointed king of cool, and baiter-in-chief of Baez, Donovan, and any other unfortunate who wound up in the line of fire of his sledgehammer jibes, Neuwirth went on to become a film-maker and a credible singer-songwriter in his own right, co-writing the wonderful ‚Mercedes Benz‘ with his friend Janis Joplin.

It’s hard to imagine the world without Bob Neuwirth in it
His spirit was so strong, his wit so ironic, his art so heartfelt, his stories so compelling, that he seemed – and was – larger than life. In his early years, he was known for his acerbic put-downs and inner-circle hipster cool, but as he aged he mellowed. His intelligence, charm, and natural warmth came into focus, as did his generosity of spirit. And what a spinner of great tales! An evening with Bob might entail a conversation about art, a few songs, information about an obscure country singer you’ve never heard of, or some hilarious gossip that makes you feel like you’re in on a great secret. What pleasure we took in his company!

I’m saddened to hear the news of Bob Neuwirth’s passing. Having had the pleasure of working with him over the years, many of us were struck by the ease that he partnered with others to create lyrics and make music. It was the keystone to his magnetism and I will miss that easygoing presence all the way from Woodstock to Gerde’s Folk City.

RIP Bob Neuwirth. Friend, mentor, teacher, renaissance man. Bob knew how to love, he taught me through example. You show up, you check in, you listen. Or as Bob would say, «If you want friends, you have to do friendly shit.» I am going to miss him forever; I already miss him and he’s only been gone one day. RIP to one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. I am so blessed to have had this beautiful man in my life.

In the tumult and tumble of the 1960s, Bob Neuwirth was the Robin to Bob Dylan’s Batman, a Zelig-like figure who was constantly at the singer’s side with a sardonic aside or a caustic put-down.
Many felt that Dylan modelled the acerbic persona he adopted in public on his friend and aide-de-camp. «The whole hipster shuck and jive — that was pure Neuwirth,» Bob Spitz wrote in an acclaimed 1989 biography of Dylan.
