Monty Norman (Bild), der am 4. April 1928 als Monty Noserovitch in London geborene britische Sänger, Texter und Komponist von Musicals und Filmmusiken, ist am 11. Juli 2022 gestorben. International bekannt wurde er durch die Komposition des Titels «Bad Sign, Good Sign», der von John Barry als Instrumentaltitel neu arrangiert zur James-Bond-Filmmusik aus «James Bond jagt Dr. No» wurde. Das «James Bond Theme» wurde zum akustischen Markenzeichen der Filmserie. (*) Norman schuf auch Songs u.a. für Cliff Richard, Tommy Steele, Bob Hope und Count Basie.

Monty Norman obituary

Monty Norman, who has died aged 94, was a prolific contributor to British musicals in the 1950s and 60s, working with directors such as Peter Brook and Joan Littlewood.

Among his successes as a composer, lyricist or both were the musicals Expresso Bongo, Irma La Douce and Make Me an Offer. However, his best known and most lucrative composition was the James Bond theme, the brief staccato phrase written for Dr No in 1962 – and included in subsequent films in the James Bond series.

While Norman composed the Bond theme, it was John Barry who arranged the jazzy, orchestral version that would play in Dr. No and subsequent Bond flicks. As a result, Barry was often wrongly credited with crafting the theme, and in the early 2000s, Norman even successfully sued the Sunday Times for libel after it printed one such mistake.

«Quite often these days people come up to me and say, ‘Oh, you’re the man who wrote dum-diddy-dum-dum,’» Norman said, referencing the pattern of that lead guitar riff. «They don’t even sing the melody! But everyone seems to know what they mean!»
