Der am 26. August 1927 in Pune (Maharashtra) geborene indische Architekt Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi (Bild) ist am 24. Januar 2023 in Ahmedabad (Gujarat) gestorben. Der berühmte Architekt und Stadtplaner, der 2018 als erster Inder mit dem renommierten Pritzker-Preis geehrt wurde, ist einer der wenigen Pioniere moderner Architektur auf dem Subkontinent. In über 60 Jahren architektonischer Praxis hat Doshi eine Vielzahl unterschiedlichster Projekte verwirklicht. Dabei übernahm er die Grundsätze der modernen Architektur nicht einfach, sondern brachte sie mit den lokalen Traditionen und den kulturellen, materiellen und natürlichen Gegebenheiten vor Ort in Einklang. (*) Doshi wurde stark von Le Corbusier beeinflusst.

Balkrishna Doshi, pioneer of modernist architecture in India, passes away at 95

Distinguished architect Balkrishna Vithaldas (BV) Doshi (95), who worked with architecture legends of the 20th century like Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, breathed his last at his residence in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Doshi is considered a pioneer of modernist and brutalist architecture in India.

Doshi was the first Indian to be awarded the Pritzker Prize — considered to be the Nobel Prize of Architecture — in 2018 and Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, in 2020. PM Narendra Modi and leading Indian and international names from the architecture fraternity paid rich tributes to Doshi.

Ein Pionier im günstigen Bau von Wohnungen

Doshi leistete ab den 1950er-Jahren Pionierarbeit im Bereich des günstigen Wohnungsbaus in Indien. Für das 1989 errichtete Aranya Low Cost Housing in Indore erhielt er den Aga-Khan-Preis für Architektur. Der Wohnkomplex wird von schmalen Gassen durchzogen und ist durch Innenhöfe räumlich aufgelockert. Außerdem interpretiert der Entwurf traditionelle indische Städte auf moderne Weise und erinnert dabei an deren charakteristische Elemente: Dorfplatz und Bazaar, Gassen und Innenhöfe. Im Aranya-Komplex können die 80’000 Bewohner ihre eigenen Erweiterungen und Anpassungen an den Wohnungen vornehmen.
