DER BRITISCHE FILMREGISSEUR HUGH HUDSON IST GESTORBEN

Der am 25. August 1936 in London geborene britische Filmregisseur und Werbefilmer Hugh Hudson (Bild) ist am 10. Februar 2023 ebenda gestorben. Besondere Bekanntheit erlangte er durch den Film «Chariots of Fire» («Die Stunde des Siegers», 1981), der vier Oscars erhielt (u.a. für den «Besten Film»). 1984 folgte ein weiterer künstlerischer wie kommerzieller Erfolg mit dem Film «Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes». Der Streifen machte seine Hauptdarsteller Christopher Lambert und Andie MacDowell zu Stars und erhielt drei Oscar-Nominierungen. Der Film «Altamira» (2016) mit Antonio Banderas in der Hauptrolle war Hudsons letzte realisierte Regiearbeit. Hudson drehte auch zahlreiche und vielfach ausgezeichnete Werbespots (u.a. zusammen mit Ridley Scott und Alan Parker).

Along with his contemporaries Ridley Scott, Alan Parker and Adrian Lyne, Hudson, who has died aged 86, made his name directing stylish, expensive commercials in Britain. He estimated that he shot more than 1,500 of them prior to his big-screen debut with Chariots of Fire, which told the story of two British athletes, Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) and Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), who won gold at the 1924 Paris Olympics after overcoming personal hurdles; Abrahams faced antisemitism at Cambridge, where he was a student, while Liddell, a devout Christian who claimed to feel God’s pleasure in him when he ran, refused to compete on the Sabbath even when his Olympic race was scheduled for that day.

Chariots of Fire director dies at 86

London-born Hudson started out in documentaries and advertising and Chariots of Fire was his first feature film. Other films followed including Greystoke, a new take on the story of Tarzan, and Revolution – a historical epic starring Al Pacino set during the American War of Independence that flopped badly at the box office.

His death follows that of Vangelis, who wrote the stirring theme tune, last May, and Ben Cross who died in 2020 having played British Olympic athlete Harold Abrahams in the film.

The British Film Institute said «Chariots of Fire» became «one of the decade’s most controversial British films» due to its perception as a «radical indictment of establishment snobbery.»

In a 2012 interview with The Guardian newspaper, Hudson said he thought film producer David Putnam had chosen him to direct the film «because he sensed I’d relate to the themes of class and racial prejudice.»

Der für den Film «Die Stunde des Siegers» («Chariots of Fire») mit vier Oscars ausgezeichnete britische Regisseur Hugh Hudson ist tot. Der 86-Jährige sei am Freitag nach kurzer Krankheit in London gestorben, erklärte seine Familie am Freitagabend. «Die Stunde des Siegers» von 1981 ist insbesondere durch den Soundtrack des Musikers Vangelis in Erinnerung geblieben, wurde bei den Oscars 1982 unter anderem aber auch als bester Film und für die beste Regie ausgezeichnet.
