ZUM TOD DER KANADISCHEN SCHRIFTSTELLERIN UND LITERATURNOBELPREISTRÄGERIN ALICE MUNRO
Die am 10. Juli 1931 in Wingham (Ontario) geborene kanadische Schriftstellerin Alice Munro (Bild) ist am 13. Mai 2024 in Port Hope (Ontario) gestorben. Ihr Werk umfasst mehr als 150 Kurzgeschichten. Munro hat die Struktur von Kurzgeschichten revolutioniert. Ihre Geschichten, die sich durch sprachlichen Feinschliff auszeichnen, beginnen oft an einer unerwarteten Stelle; anschliessend wird die Erzählung chronologisch rückwärts oder vorwärts entwickelt. Mit ihren Erzählungen knüpfte Munro an die angelsächsische Tradition der Short Story an; sie wird oft mit Anton Tschechow, dem russischen Meister dieser Form, verglichen. In Kanada und im englischsprachigen Raum ist Alice Munro eine Bestsellerautorin. Sie wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, unter anderem 2009 mit dem Man Booker International Prize und 2013 mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur. (*)

Short story legend Alice Munro, whose intricate tales depicting small-town southwestern Ontario earned her an international fanbase and the Nobel Prize in literature, has died at age 92.
Penguin Random House Canada said in an emailed statement that it was mourning the death of «a national treasure,» calling Munro a writer of «enormous depth, empathy and humanity» whose work inspired countless others.

Born in 1931 in Wingham, Ontario, Munro grew up on what she described as the «collapsing enterprise of a fox and mink farm, just beyond the most disreputable part of town» in a 1994 interview with «The Paris Review.» Amid familial struggles, Munro found an escape in reading as a child. Her early enthusiasm for renowned writers such as Emily Brontë, Charles Dickens, and Lucy Maud Montgomery, among others, reflected an appreciation for literature beyond her age.

Munro wrote short stories for more than 60 years
Her first major break-through came in 1968, when her short story collection, Dance of The Happy Shades, about life in the suburbs of western Ontario, won Canada’s highest literary honour, the Governor General’s Award. It was the first of three Governor General’s Awards she would win in her lifetime.
Munro has published thirteen collections of stories as well as one novel, Lives of Girls and Women, and two volumes of Selected Stories.

Munros Erzählungen zeichnet bei aller sprachlichen Perfektion und Feinarbeit das Überraschende aus. Häufig stehen Frauen im Mittelpunkt der Geschichten: einfache, aus dem Alltag gegriffene Figuren aus Kleinstädten mit Backsteinhäusern und leeren Landstraßen, in der Gegend um Ontario, wo Munro selbst 1931 als Alice Ann Laidlaw auf einer Silberfuchsfarm in kleine Verhältnisse hineingeboren worden war. Um sie spann Munro Hoffnungen und Enttäuschungen, Obsessionen und Hinfälligkeiten: sie lassen sich scheiden, betrügen betrunken ihre Männer mit deren Kumpeln oder stibitzen Geld von den Eltern, bis diese pleite gehen.
