Original Iron Maiden singer Paul Di’Anno dies
Born Paul Andrews, the musician featured on the band’s first two albums, Iron Maiden and Killers, establishing them as a crucial part of the new wave of British heavy metal.
He left the band in 1981 and was replaced by Bruce Dickinson. Di’Anno later admitted he had been partying «non-stop, 24 hours a day» and that the impact of his lifestyle «wasn’t fair to the band, the fans or to myself».

Paul Di’Anno obituary
The defining event in the singing career of Paul Di’Anno – and one whose influence he never managed to escape – was his departure from the London-based heavy metal band Iron Maiden in 1981.
Having joined in 1978, Di’Anno recorded an EP and two pioneering albums with the group, but disputes with the bandleader Steve Harris over musical direction, as well as his own unreliable behaviour, led the group to fire him.
The shadow of Iron Maiden lingered over Di’Anno, who has died aged 66, for the next 40 years, with a sequence of briefly successful projects mostly alluding to his former membership of one of the world’s biggest bands. After his departure he quickly descended into a chaotic lifestyle blighted by substance abuse.

The heavy metal frontman was the lead vocalist of Iron Maiden from 1978 to 1981
Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 by bassist-songwriter Steve Harris. They recruited Di’Anno in November 1978 after a chance meeting at the Red Lion pub in Leytonstone. In Mick Wall’s book «Iron Maiden: Run to the Hills, the Authorised Biography», Harris was quoted as saying: «There’s sort of a quality in Paul’s voice, a raspiness in his voice, or whatever you want to call it, that just gave it this great edge.»

Of his contributions to the Maiden discography, as well as heavy metal in general, Di’Anno said: “The two albums I made with the band were pivotal. Later on in my life when I met Metallica, Pantera, and Sepultura, and they told me that those albums were what got them into music, it made me incredibly proud.”

The powerful singer continued to record and tour through 2016, when he was hospitalized for undisclosed medical reasons; at the time «Blabbermouth» reported that Di’Anno had been forced to perform from a wheelchair due to injuries from a number of motorcycle accidents. He also faced a number of other health challenges over the years, including a near-fatal battle with sepsis that landed him in the hospital for eight months in 2015.
