Die am 10. Mai 1942 in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) geborene US-amerikanische Tänzerin und Choreografin Judith Jamison (Bild) ist am 9. November 2024 in New York City gestorben. Judith Jamison wurde 1965 Ballettsolistin am Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, seit 1989 war sie dessen künstlerische Leiterin. 2005 wurde sie in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt. She was always a goddess of dance — even before her triumph in “Cry.” The Ailey star turned artistic director stretched like there was no tomorrow.

Jamison, who died on Saturday at 81, owned every room she walked into. She was alive from every angle, a force of three-dimensional expression. In all of her dancing there was her electrifying body, long and tall, the image of towering dignity. Her stature was imposing, but she was pliant, too — a container of sensations. She could move.

Dance pioneer Judith Jamison dies at 81

As a dancer, Jamison was best known for «Cry.» First premiering in 1971, the dance is a 17-minute solo choreographed by Alvin Ailey, dedicated to «all Black women everywhere – especially our mothers.» In an interview with NPR in 2008, Jamison said the piece continues to resonate with people because it told a specific, singular story that anyone could understand. «It had nothing to do with how high I was raising my legs or how many pirouettes I was doing or any of that. It had to do with inner self and it had to do with vulnerability and being able to share that vulnerability and for you to recognize it as something human.»

Mourning Jamison’s death, Michelle Obama wrote on Twitter/X: “Judith Jamison was a true visionary in the world of dance. From the American Ballet Theatre to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, she broke barriers and stirred souls with her grace and artistry.”

“Today, Judith’s spirit will live on in all the dancers she’s inspired, in all the pieces she’s perfected, in all the audiences she has moved and uplifted. Barack and I send our love to her family, her dancers, and to all those around who looked up to her,” she added.

Writing on Instagram, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater said: “We remember and are grateful for her artistry, humanity and incredible light, which inspired us all.”
