DER KANADISCHE SÄNGER UND SONGWRITER DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS (BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS) IST GESTORBEN
Der am 13. September 1941 als David Henry Thomsett in Kingston upon Thames (GB) geborene kanadische Musiker und Singer-Songwriter David Clayton-Thomas (Bild) ist am 24. Juni 2026 in Toronto (Kanada) gestorben. Er wurde international berühmt als Sänger der Gruppe Blood, Sweat & Tears. Als er vier Jahre alt war, zog die Familie nach Kanada. Aufgewachsen in Willowdale, einem Stadtteil von Toronto, erlernte er autodidaktisch Gitarre- und Klavierspielen. Zwischen 1963 und 1965 leitete er die Rockgruppe Fabulous Shays und 1966 The Boss Men, mit denen er den Song «Brainwashed» 16 Wochen lang auf Rang eins der kanadischen Hitparade platzieren konnte. 1968 ging er zunächst als Leadgitarrist zu John Lee Hooker und wechselte im selben Jahr als Sänger zu Blood, Sweat & Tears; erstmals ist er zu hören auf deren zweitem Album «Blood, Sweat & Tears». Mit den BS&T hatte er Hits wie «You’ve Made Me So Very Happy», «And When I Die», «Hi-De-Ho», «Spinning Wheel» und die selbstkomponierten Songs «Lucretia MacEvil» und «Go Down Gamblin’». Noch als Mitglied von BS&T produzierte er im Herbst 1971 seine erste Solo-LP, und er machte sich 1972 als Solist selbständig. (*)

The most memorable vocalist for Blood Sweat & Tears David Clayton-Thomas has passed away at 84 years old.
David was in & out of Blood Sweat & Tears for years but I had the honor of working with David in his last 19 years in BS&T. David and I circled the globe with BS&T countless times. David was a hard working musician always on time and never complained about the rigorous schedule.
Everyone has a David Clayton-Thomas story. I will cherish all my good times with him.
David was my Best Man at my wedding and I was Best Man at his wedding.
David’s voice was his calling card. When you heard that voice you knew who it was.

With a deep baritone and a flair for hyperbolic sentimentality, Clayton-Thomas’ melodrama fueled a string of hits for Blood, Sweat, and Tears in the late Sixties and early Seventies. It’s almost impossible not to read song titles like “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” and “Spinning Wheel” and not hear Clayton-Thomas’ saccharine-yet-corpulent declarations of love in your mind’s ear.
Clayton-Thomas is a Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee. He achieved a special Juno recognizing his contributions to Canadian culture and has a star on the country’s Walk of Fame. “Spinning Wheel” has been recognized by the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

He joined the recently broken up band Blood, Sweat & Tears who then reformed and sparked the attention of the legendary music executive Clive Davis who later described Clayton-Thomas as a “staggering” musician
“Blood, Sweat & Tears was such an unusual mix of people,” Clayton-Thomas said in an interview. “We had guys in that band whose background was totally Juilliard. We had other guys who were right out of Berkeley – hard-core be-bop jazzers – and then we had another faction like me who were basically saloon-trained rock and roll R&B Telecaster players.”
His first album with the band was a smash hit, selling 10m copies worldwide, charting for 109 weeks in the US, also winning five Grammy awards. Hit singles also included And When I Die and You’ve Made Me So Very Happy.
When Clayton-Thomas was asked if he knew the band would be as successful as it became, he said: “I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but yeah. The first time I walked in and sang with that band, we were in shock. It was one of those electrical things that happen.”

Zu scharfen Bläsersätzen, funky Drums und einem tief grummelndem Bass singt David Clayton-Thomas: „What goes up must come down / Spinnin’ wheel gotta go ‘round.“ Sein Bariton klingt geschmeidig, einmal lässt er ein Vibrato flattern wie ein Opernheld. „Spinning Wheel“, geschrieben von Clayton-Thomas, erreichte den zweiten Platz der Billboard-Charts und stieg zum Klassiker auf, gecovert von Sammy Davis Jr., Shirley Bassey und James Brown.
David Clayton-Thomas, 1949 als Sohn eines kanadischen Soldaten und einer englischen Sängerin in Kingston upon Thames geboren, wuchs ab 1945 in Kanada auf. Er brachte sich das Gitarrenspiel autodidaktisch bei, büxte von zu Hause aus, wurde wegen Landstreicherei verhaftet. Der Blues hat ihn genauso geprägt wie die Arbeit in einem Stahlwerk.
