Der am 30. Dezember 1952 in New York City geborene US-amerikanische Gitarrist Woody Mann (Bild) ist am 27. Januar 2022 ebenda gestorben. Woody Mann arbeitete in den Stilrichtungen Blues, Country-Blues, Ragtime, Gospel und Swing. Er war einer der international bekanntesten und besten Fingerpicking-Gitarristen seines Genres. Erfolgreich war der Musiker daneben auch als Lehrer; er veröffentlichte zahlreiche Gitarren-Schulen, Lehrbücher und -videos und hielt Workshops und internationale Gitarren-Seminare ab. Zu seinen Schülern gehörte unter anderem Paul Simon.* Woody selber ging bei Blues-Gitarrist Reverend Gary Davis und Jazz-Pianist Lennie Tristano in die Schule.

American blues, gospel and ragtime guitarist has died

He was born in New York, where he studied acoustic guitar with blues guitarist Reverend Gary Davis from 1968–72. He received formal instruction at the Juilliard School’s pre-college program, earned a degree at Empire State College in 1974, and returned to Juilliard to pursue post-baccalaureate studies in music performance and composition from 1975–76. Mann founded International Guitar Seminars and Acoustic Sessions and has authored books and DVDs, including The Blues Fakeboook, Anthology of Blues Guitar, The Art of Blues Guitar DVD series, Lisboa, The Guitar of Woody Mann and numerous others.

You must know that the legend used to be a producer, writer, and filmmaker who has co-produced the award-winning feature documentary, «Harlem Street Singer,» the story of Reverend Gary Davis, the legendary Gospel, blues, and ragtime guitarist, produced the soundtrack CD «Empire Root Band.»

He also penned his latest book, «Just Play,» which combines the history and stories of artists Woody has known and worked with, including jazz guitarist Attila Zoller, Lennie Portuguese composer Carlos Paredes, and his early mentors Reverend Gary Davis and jazz great Lennie Tristano.

The world is a poorer place today. We’ve lost a great guitarist, composer, teacher, filmmaker, and – most of all – a truly fine human being. Woody Mann was all these things and more. He exuded warmth and sincerity and was a loyal and faithful friend. An early student of Rev. Gary Davis, he went on to learn from Lennie Tristano and added jazz and other modern elements to his rootsy, soulful guitar compositions.

So sad to hear Woody Mann died yesterday. I have very fond memories of Woody being the guest teacher on one of my New York Guitar Retreats and also touring together in the USA and Europe. He was a hugely talented, kind and generous man who will be missed by all who knew him.

With great sadness we learnt this morning that Woody Mann passed away. He will be greatly missed. He was a wonderful musician and educator.
