ZUM TOD DES JAMAIKANISCHEN REGGAESÄNGERS UND -MUSIKERS JIMMY CLIFF
Der am 30. Juli 1944 in Saint James Parish als James Chambers geborene jamaikanische Reggaesänger und -musiker, Songwriter und Schauspieler Jimmy Cliff (Bild) ist am 24. November 2025 gestorben. Er wurde durch Songs wie «I Can See Clearly Now», «Fundamental Reggay» sowie «You Can Get It If You Really Want» und «The Harder They Come» vom gleichnamigen Soundtrack-Album international bekannt und war damit wesentlich am weltweiten Durchbruch der Reggae-Musik beteiligt. Im Kultfilm «The Harder They Come» spielte er die Hauptrolle. Cliffs Karriere hatte noch in der Ska-Ära mit dem Lied «Hurricane Hattie» begonnen, das ein Hit wurde. Lieder von Jimmy Cliff wurden von vielen Künstler:innen weltweit in Coverversionen aufgenommen, so z.B auch von Cher, Joe Cocker und Bruce Springsteen. Bob Dylan sagte, Jimmy Cliffs Song «Vietnam» sei das beste Protestlied, das er jemals gehört habe. Cliff gewann zwei Grammys und wurde in die Rock & Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen. (*) Jimmy Cliff trat über viele Jahre immer wieder auch in der Schweiz auf, von Nyon bis St.Gallen, von Lugano bis Bern, - zum letzten Mal vor sechs Jahren in Zürich.

‘Jamaica has lost a giant’: PNP mourns Jimmy Cliff
Kingston, Jamaica —The Opposition People’s National Party has joined the nation and the international community in mourning the loss of reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, who died on Monday at the age of 81. Cliff’s family confirmed he succumbed to pneumonia following a seizure.
In a statement, Opposition Spokesperson for Culture, Creative Industries and Information Nekeisha Burchell praised Cliff as both a musical trailblazer and a global cultural ambassador. She noted his seminal role in bringing Jamaica’s music, struggles and spirit to the world, particularly through his enduring songs and his starring role in the landmark film The Harder They Come.

“All I really wanted to do was to get out this creative yearning that was inside of me,” Cliff told The Times in 1999.
“The Harder They Come,” in which Cliff played a Robin Hood-like folk hero, connected with audiences at home and in the United States, where it became a mainstay of the midnight-movie scene. Einen internationalen Hit hatte Jimmy Cliff Anfang der Achtzigerjahre auch mit dem Song »Reggae Nights«. Cliff war insgesamt für sieben Grammys nominiert und wurde zweimal für das beste Reggaealbum ausgezeichnet: 1986 für »Cliff Hanger« und 2012 für »Rebirth«, das weithin als seine beste Arbeit seit Langem angesehen wurde.

Dazu war er zu weltoffen. Entsprechend offen war er stilistisch, das hatte er schon 1969 mit dem berührenden Lied „Many Rivers To Cross“ gezeigt.

Hymnen für Hoffnung und Widerstand
Cliff betonte ein Leben lang, dass er aus einfachen Verhältnissen gekommen sei. «Reggae ist der Schrei und die Freude der armen Menschen», sagte er einmal in der CBC-Radiosendung «Q with Tom Power».
Cliff blieb bis zuletzt aktiv und trat noch vor wenigen Jahren bei Festivals auf. Seine Songs gelten als Hymnen für Hoffnung und Widerstand.
