Der am 9. August 1942 in Chicago geborene US-amerikanische Jazz-Schlagzeuger, Pianist und Komponist Jack DeJohnette (Bild) ist am 26. Oktober 2025 in Woodstock (New York) gestorben. Von 1966 bis 1969 war er an der Seite von Keith Jarrett Mitglied des Charles-Lloyd-Quartetts, was ihn international bekannt machte. Ausserdem trat er in dieser Zeit u.a. mit John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea sowie mit Bill Evans (mit Letzterem beim Montreux Jazz Festival 1968) auf. Seit dieser Zeit war er einer der einflussreichsten Jazz-Schlagzeuger. 1969 wurde er Mitglied der Miles Davis-Band, wo er Tony Williams ersetzte und an den Aufnahmen für das epochale Werk «Bitches Brew» mitwirkte. Er leitete auch eigene Formationen und spielte dabei ausser Schlagzeug ebenfalls Melodica, Piano, Clavinet und Orgel. In den 1970er-Jahren war DeJohnette ein vielgefragter Sideman bei zahlreichen ECM-Sessions. Er war in der Folge Teil vieler unvergessener Projekte u.a. mit Miroslav Vitouš, John Abercrombie, Lester Bowie, Eddie Gomez, Terje Rypdal, John Surman, Kenny Wheeler, Jan Garbarek, David Murray, Arthur Blythe, John Purcell, Chico Freeman, Peter Warren, Mick Goodrick, Pat Metheny, Ornette Coleman, Michael Brecker, Sonny Rollins oder Foday Musa Suso. Ab Anfang der 1980er-Jahre war DeJohnette Schlagzeuger des Keith Jarrett Trios. 2016 listete ihn der «Rolling Stone» auf Rang 40 der 100 grössten Schlagzeuger aller Zeiten. Er gewann zwei Grammy-Awards, und 2011 erhielt Jack DeJohnette das Jazz Masters Fellowship der staatlichen NEA-Stiftung. (*)

In Memoriam: Jack DeJohnette, 1942–2025

DeJohnette was one of the most distinctive drumming stylists of the post-bop era. He was a propulsive and melodic player, but also highly inventive with timbre and texture by dint of spreading his rhythms across the kit — often using unexpected pieces of the kit for ostinatos and accents. The sound was often explosive, with his snare taking on an instantly recognizable snap.

But DeJohnette was not satisfied to rest on these laurels, spending the entirety of his career searching for new ways to evolve what he called a “multidirectional” approach. At the same time, this stylistic evolution was not entirely a conscious one. “When I play, I go into an altered state, a different headspace,” he told Modern Drummer. “I plug into my higher self, into the cosmic library of ideas.”

The phrase “poetry in motion”? That is Jack DeJohnette, the epic, dynamicsrich and legendary jazz drummer, pianist, abstract conceptualist and composer who died at the age of 83 on October 26.

Devising, as he did, his own fluid and multidirectional drum style, DeJohnette came at you from a dozen varied angles and tonalities. He surrounded you with the potency and nuance of the drum — a quadrophenic, if you will — and changed the way listeners experience rhythm (and how other drummers approached their kits). Within his sound there were wild brassy and woody timbres, pocket-deep grooves and impossible-to-identify tics.

The great jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette, who worked with Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins and Charles Lloyd among others and who also enjoyed a successful solo career, has died aged 83, his record company ECM confirmed earlier today.

A versatile, powerhouse sticksman as at home with free jazz and fusion as he was with R&B, DeJohnette was born in Chicago in 1942 and played piano from the age of five or six, continuing the instrument alongside the drums which he picked up in his early teens. He started out singing doo-wop in a vocal group and playing rock’n’roll, but was gradually drawn towards jazz, and from the late 1950s had his own trio.

In an interview for the NEA at the time, DeJohnette described what he felt was the nature of his talent.

“The best gift that I have is the ability to listen, not only listen audibly but listen with my heart,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to play with a lot of musicians and leaders who allowed me to have that freedom.” He added: “I just never doubted that I would be successful at this because it just feels like something’s going through me and lifting me up, and carrying me. Einer der weltbesten Schlagzeuger

Er sei ein Farbenkünstler, sagte der Vollblutmusiker der deutschen Zeitung Taz einmal in einem Interview. Er trommele «wie ein Maler, der Pastelle, Öl- und Wasserfarben aufträgt». Und so vermischte und integrierte der Jazz-Freigeist zahlreiche Einflüsse und Klänge. Er näherte sich der E-Gitarre und dem Synthesizer ebenso wie dem New Age und der afrikanischen Musik. Kaum ein anderer liess Klänge aus allen Musikrichtungen so einfliessen und sein Schlagzeug so schwingen wie er. Denn als Kind hatte er alle Arten von Musik gehört und sie nie in Kategorien eingeteilt. Er habe Opern gehört, Country- und Westernmusik, Rhythm and Blues, Swing und Jazz, sagte er in Interviews. Für ihn sei das alles Musik gewesen und alles grossartig.

Der Kämpfer

Ein ganzes Buch würde die Liste der Projekte füllen, die Jack DeJohnette in den letzten Jahrzehnten im Studio und auf Bühnen bespielte. Sein eigenes Trio mit John Coltranes Sohn Ravi und Matthew Garrison, dem Sohn des Coltrane-Bassisten Jimmy, lotete noch einmal die gesamte Bandbreite der afroamerikanischen Kultur aus, von Earth, Wind & Fires Gospeldisco bis zu Coltranes politischem Zorn. Das war Aufbruch, Revolution in Zeiten der „Black Lives Matter“-Bewegung, die zeigte, dass die Bürgerrechtsbewegung keineswegs gesiegt hat in Amerika. Da kam er noch einmal zu seinen Anfängen zurück, in Chicago, als der Jazz keine Musik um ihrer selbst willen war, sondern ein Manifest für Befreiung und Fortschritt.

Seine Töne und Akzente konnten überraschen, gar überrollen. Trotzdem hatten sie eine hinreißend witzige Feinheit. Markant und äußerst persönlich war der Stil dieses Musikers, der vom Schlagzeug aus das Geschehen leitete: Jack DeJohnette. Ein ganz großer Jazzmusiker, für den es typisch war, dass er – kein Wunder bei seinem Hauptinstrument – ganz viel im Hintergrund wirkt.

Pilot der Zukunft

Diese Subtilität. Diese Kraft. Diese Präzision. Und vor allem: dieser Sinn für perkussive Klanglichkeit, die sich ihren Raum nicht von der Notwendigkeit abkaufen lässt, das rhythmische Gerüst zu liefern. Wenn ein Schlagzeuger dies alles zuletzt vereinen konnte, dann war es Jack DeJohnette. Der kristallklar akzentuierte Fluss am Ride-Becken war vielleicht sein Erkennungszeichen, aber in den himmelweit verschiedenen Kontexten, in denen er es einsetzte, war es nur ein Element unter vielen.
