Peter Straub, Literary Master of the Supernatural, Dies at 79
A fan of Henry James and John Ashbery, he brought a poet’s sensibility to stories about ghosts, demons and other things that go bump in the night.

Peter Straub, celebrated writer of dark tales and horror, dies at 79
Mr. Straub — who collaborated with King on «The Talisman» (1984) and a sequel «Black House» 2001 — said he long resisted being categorized as a horror novelist. But he made peace with it after deciding it gave him ample room to dig into timeless emotions and fears — including even his whodunit Blue Rose trilogy published between 1998 and 1983.

«Straub’s strength as a novelist is that he works sidewise to reality,» Dale Bailey wrote in a Times review of «A Dark Matter» in 2014. «Like the gothic fiction that inspires him, his worlds abound with coincidence and images of surreal power.»

The bio on his website reveals a hint of Straub’s wry humor:
«When kindergarten turned out to be a stupefyingly banal disappointment devoted to cutting animal shapes out of heavy colored paper, he took matters into his own hands and taught himself to read by memorizing his comic books and reciting them over and over to other neighborhood children on the front steps until he could recognize the words.»

Straub authored numerous novels, short stories and novellas during his lifetime, from his debut horror novel Julia in 1975 – later filmed as The Haunting of Julia – to the 2010 novel A Dark Matter and The Talisman, which he co-wrote with Stephen King.
King tweeted his condolences on Tuesday, calling Straub a «good friend» and «amazingly talented colleague and collaborator».
«Working with him was one of the great joys of my creative life,» he wrote. The two co-wrote Black House, a sequel to The Talisman, published in 2001.
