ZUM TOD DES BRITISCHEN FOLK-GEIGERS DAVE «SWARB» SWARBRICK

Der am 5. April 1941 in New Malden (London) geborene Folk- und Folk-Rock-Geiger, Mandolinist, Songwriter und Sänger Dave Swarbrick (Bild) ist am 3. Juni 2016 gestorben. Besonders breite internationale Bekanntheit erlangte er als Mitglied der stilbildenden Band Fairport Convention.

In den 1950er-Jahren begann Swarbrick zunächst Klavier zu lernen, sattelte jedoch bald auf Fiedel um. In den 1960er-Jahren spielte er unter anderem mit Ian Campbell, Martin Carthy und A. L. Lloyd, bis er 1967 sein Solo-Debüt Rags, Reels & Airs veröffentlichte. 1969 spielte er dann als Gastmusiker auf Fairport Conventions Unhalfbricking, bei denen er 1970 festes Mitglied wurde und für neun Jahre blieb. Nebenbei arbeitete Swarbrick weiterhin auch an Solo-Alben.

1979 kehrte er Fairport Convention den Rücken, da die elektrische Musik bei ihm inzwischen für Schwerhörigkeit gesorgt hatte. In den frühen 1980er-Jahren tourte Swarbrick mit Simon Nicol (…).

Folk musician Dave Swarbrick has died at 75, his family have announced. Best known for his work with the hugely influential folk group Fairport Convention, Swarbrick was a virtuosic violin player and one of the most highly regarded musicians of the 1960s folk revival. He also wrote, arranged and sang, and performed on the viola, mandolin and mandola, and guitar.

The folk music fiddler Dave Swarbrick, who has died aged 75, was a formidable and intuitive musician who first made his mark with the Ian Campbell Folk Group in the early 1960s. With the folk singer and guitarist Martin Carthy, Swarbrick formed the best-known folk duo of the 1960s, and as a member of Fairport Convention, he directed the band through its early folk-rock period, and emerged as a songwriter of distinction. Various other musical collaborations followed, but the duo with Carthy endured.

In 2004 he received a lifetime achievement award in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and in 2006 Fairport’s Liege & Lief album was voted «Most Influential Folk Album of All Time» by Radio 2 listeners. At the 2007 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, he and Martin Carthy won the «Best Duo» Award. In 2012 he received another lifetime achievement award at the 2012 Fatea awards.

His most recent performance was a 17-venue tour of the UK in April and May 2014 supported by folk trio Said the Maiden, at his request.

I met Dave back in early 1960s. I was booked at The Crown in Birmingham, at that time the home of the Ian Campbell Folk Group. There was this extraordinary fiddle player – a cheeky face a seemingly endless number of musical ideas about playing the fiddle. Even at that young stage in his career it was evident I was in the presence of a master instrumentalist.
