The folk music fiddler Dave Swarbrick, who has died aged 75, was a formidable and intuitive musician who first made his mark with the Ian Campbell Folk Group in the early 1960s. With the folk singer and guitarist Martin Carthy, Swarbrick formed the best-known folk duo of the 1960s, and as a member of Fairport Convention, he directed the band through its early folk-rock period, and emerged as a songwriter of distinction. Various other musical collaborations followed, but the duo with Carthy endured.

I met Dave back in early 1960s. I was booked at The Crown in Birmingham, at that time the home of the Ian Campbell Folk Group. There was this extraordinary fiddle player – a cheeky face a seemingly endless number of musical ideas about playing the fiddle. Even at that young stage in his career it was evident I was in the presence of a master instrumentalist. THANK YOU my dear friend for your wonderful creativity; the music you have given all of us and especially your wonderful playing in our band, THE BAND OF HOPE.
