Der am 20. Januar 1929 in Washington D.C. geborene US-amerikanische Jazz-Schlagzeuger Wilbur James «Jimmy» Cobb (Bild) ist am 24. Mai 2020 in Manhattan (New York) gestorben. Er spielte mit Grössen wie Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie und John Coltrane zusammen. International berühmt wurde er insbesondere durch seine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit Miles Davis. Jimmy Cobb war der letzte verbliebene lebende Musiker, der 1959 bei den Aufnahmen zum legendären Jazz-Album «Kind of Blue» mitgewirkt hatte.

Cobb was the last surviving member of what’s often called Miles Davis‘ First Great Sextet. He held that title for almost three decades, serving as a conduit for many generations of jazz fans into the band that recorded the music’s most iconic and enduring album, Kind of Blue.

«I guess the sensitivity probably comes from having to work with singers, because you have to really be sensitive there,» he said in an oral history by the Smithsonian, which named him an NEA Jazz Master in 2009. «You have to listen and just be a part of what’s going on.»

Along with Davis‘ modal, melodic masterpiece Kind of Blue – which Rolling Stone named the 12th-best album of all time – he joined the trumpeter on several other albums, including 1959’s Porgy and Bess, 1960’s Sketches of Spain, 1961’s Someday My Prince Will Come, and the 1962 live set Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall.

But Kind of Blue remains an unparalleled jazz landmark, and Cobb’s shimmering cymbal work and feather-light pulse helped the album achieve its otherworldly sense of cool.

«Miles would tell us all little things to do and then have us work off his idea,» Cobb told Billboard in 2019. «He trusted all of us because he knew we were all good musicians. He didn’t really have to do anything else but say what he wanted done. One time he tried to tell me something about playing the drums with both hands, and I turned to him said, ‘Um, let me play the drums!‘ But we were good friends, so I could say things like that to him without worrying about getting fired.»

A tasteful drummer known for his pulse and groove-who eschewed showy grandstanding-Cobb was comfortable being in the role of accompanist. It was a quality that made him a sought-after collaborator for decades.

Jazz musician who was key to Davis’s sound was the last surviving player on the classic album

Cobb was key in helping to achieve the cool disposition of a handful of Davis’s masterworks, including 1959’s Porgy and Bess, 1960’s Sketches of Spain, 1961’s Someday My Prince Will Come, the 1962 live set Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall and Live at the Black Hawk sessions.

But it was his cymbal work and light pulse on Kind of Blue, the album that cemented Davis’s reputation as the coolest of jazz cats and cited as the best-selling jazz record ever released, for which he will be best remembered.
