Die am 13. Oktober 1927 als Anita Jean Grilli in Memphis (Tennessee) geborene US-amerikanisch-schweizerische, mit drei Grammys ausgezeichnete Sängerin, Arrangeurin, Komponistin, Dirigentin, Pianistin und Musikproduzentin Anita Kerr (Bild) ist am 10. Oktober 2022 in Carouge (GE) gestorben.(*) Grosse Erfolge feierte sie mit The Anita Kerr Singers und als eine der führenden Arrangeure und Produzentinnen in Nashville. Hier prägte sie massgeblich den Nashville Sound und verantwortete Produktionen für Country-Stars wie Jim Reeves, Chet Atkins, Hank Locklin oder Skeeter Davis. Im Background waren Kerr und ihre SängerInnen neben zahlreichen Country-Platten auch auf Alben von Pop-Grössen wie Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney, Roy Orbison oder Pat Boone zu hören. Ihren ersten Hit hatte Kerr mit The Little Dippers: «Forever» erreichte 1960 Platz 9 der US-Single-Charts. Zwischen 1963 und 1978 wurde Kerr für sieben Grammys nominiert; dreimal konnte sie diesen in Empfang nehmen. Kerr zog 1970 in die Schweiz und veröffentlichte bis zum Ende des Jahrzehnts regelmässig Platten. Musikalisch widmete sie sich verstärkt der christlichen Pop- und Gospel-Musik. 1985 komponierte sie den Titel «Piano, Piano», der als Schweizer Beitrag zum Eurovision Song Contest eingereicht wurde. Mit einem Text von Trudi Müller-Bosshard und den Interpreten Mariella Farré und Pino Gasparini erreichte das Lied Platz 12.

From early childhood on, Ms. Kerr said, she knew she would spend her life making music.

«I did everything regarding music, I couldn’t get enough,» she wrote on her website. «I never had the problem of wondering what I was going to do when I grew up. I always knew that it would be music.»

Anita Kerr, one of the Nashville Sound’s most influential background vocalists and arrangers, died Monday, October 10, 2022, in Geneva, Switzerland. She was three days shy of her ninety-fifth birthday. During the 1950s and 1960s, she and her namesake group, the Anita Kerr Singers, provided the background vocals on thousands of country and country-pop recordings and helped broaden country music’s appeal in the face of the commercial threat posed by rock & roll.

Sad news from Switzerland. As it turns out, Geneva-based American singer, composer, arranger, and conductor Anita Kerr (94) passed away last Monday. Mrs Kerr is best-known for her involvement with the Anita Kerr Singers – to my mind, easy-listening music never sounded better than with this emblematic close-harmony group.

Moving from America to Switzerland in 1970, Anita Kerr continued her musical activities, with her singing group as well as with other projects – one being her composition ‚Piano, piano‘, which was Switzerland’s Eurovision entry in Gothenburg (1985). Conducted by Kerr herself, the song, performed as a duet by Mariella Farré & Pino Gasparini, finished twelfth.
