ZUM TOD DES US-AMERIKANISCHEN SÄNGERS, SONGWRITERS, BANDLEADERS UND MUSIKPRODUZENTEN SLY STONE
Der am 15. März 1943 als Sylvester Stewart in Denton (Texas) geborene US-amerikanische Sänger, Songwriter, Bandleader und Musikproduzent Sly Stone (Bild) ist am 9. Juni 2025 in Los Angeles gestorben. Er verband Rock, Soul, Pop und Jazz miteinander. Seine Band Sly & the Family Stone wurde durch einen Auftritt beim Woodstock-Festival im Jahr 1969 bekannt und übte Einfluss auf die Hippie-Generation aus. Mitte der 1970er löste sich die Band auf. Aufgrund anhaltender Drogenprobleme, die Stone häufig mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt brachten, verschwand er Ende der 1970er-Jahre zunehmend von der Bildfläche. Er konnte nicht mehr an den Erfolg von Sly & the Family Stone anknüpfen. Im Jahr 2008 listete ihn das US-Musikmagazin «Rolling Stone» auf Rang 78 der 100 grössten Sänger und 2015 auf Rang 42 der 100 grössten Songwriter aller Zeiten. (*)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved dad, Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone. After a prolonged battle with COPD and other underlying health issues, Sly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his three children, his closest friend, and his extended family.
While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come.
Sly was a monumental figure, a groundbreaking innovator, and a true pioneer who redefined the landscape of pop, funk, and rock music. His iconic songs have left an indelible mark on the world, and his influence remains undeniable. In a testament to his enduring creative spirit, Sly recently completed the screenplay for his life story, a project we are eager to share with the world in due course, which follows a memoir published in 2024.

From his beginnings in a family gospel group and his time as a lively San Francisco DJ, Stone became one of the major innovators in R&B, rock and pop music. There was a keen curiosity, even a restlessness, in the way he kept changing his group’s sound during its short, spectacular stint at the top.
Stone had a capacity for summing up the zeitgeist of an America in social transition, from collective joy (“Dance to the Music”) to racial harmony (“Everyday People”), and from the search for transcendence (“I Want To Take You Higher”) to the broken idealism in which the 1960s ended (“Don’t Call Me Nigger, Whitey”), a timeline in which he created a template for future generations of funk-rock hybrids.

Musik und Texte bringen die Hoffnungen der Bürgerrechtsbewegung auf soziale Teilhabe und das gestiegene Selbstbewusstsein der Schwarzen Musikkultur mit dem Optimismus der Hippie-Ära zu etwas völlig selbstverständlichem Neuem zusammen: Funk.

In der Mitte des Songs springen die Geschwister von ihren Klavierhockern auf, schnappen sich ein Mikro und hüpfen zwischen den TV-Studiogästen der ersten Reihen herum. „Higher, higher“, singen Rosie und Sly Stone und zeigen nach oben, während das Publikum – die Herren in Anzügen, die Damen in Blusen – schüchtern lächelnd zu ihnen aufschaut.
Niemand steht auf oder tanzt, dabei entfacht die Band auf der Bühne einen mitreißenden Groove. Die Geschwister singen unbeirrt weiter, klatschen, stampfen und kehren für das Songfinale zurück an ihre Plätze. Immerhin: Sie bekommen viel Applaus.

Radikal überwand er als Erster die Segregation der Popmusik. Mit seiner Band, Sly and the Family Stone, spielte Sly Stone 1969 sowohl am weissen Woodstock wie beim Harlem Cultural Festival vor einer rein Schwarzen Crowd. Die Nasa flog zum Mond, Stone hob ab in die Sphären des ersten Schwarzen Popstars, wenn Pop heisst: für alle. Das sah man schon in der Band selbst, denn da spielten zwei weisse Jungs mit, einer sogar am Schlagzeug. Fast noch krasser: auch zwei Frauen, seine Schwester Rose am Piano und Cynthia Robinson an der Trompete.
