Der britische Bildhauer Anthony Caro ist gestorben
Der 1924 in New Malden, Surrey, geborene britische Bildhauer Anthony Caro ist am 23. Oktober 2013 gestorben.

Sir Anthony Caro, a pre-eminent artist of the postwar era who created a new language for abstract sculpture in the 1960s with brightly colored, horizontal assemblages of welded steel that seemed choreographed as much as constructed, died on Wednesday in London.

Sir Anthony was widely regarded as the greatest British sculptor of his generation and worked as an assistant to Henry Moore in the 1950s.
Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota called him «one of the outstanding sculptors of the past 50 years».

Noch im Juni hatte der britische Bildhauer Anthony Caro geschworen, er werde arbeiten, bis er hundert Jahre alt sei. Das war bei der Eröffnung einer Ausstellung in der Gagosian Gallery in London. Auch eine grosse Retrospektive im Museo Correr in Venedig (bis 27. Oktober) erlebte er noch. Am 23. Oktober 2013 starb der Mann, der Skulpturen-Sockel überflüssig machte und seine Werke sockellos aus der Erde wachsen liess, im Alter von 89 Jahren an einer plötzlichen Herzattacke.
