Der am 29. Oktober 1944 in Birmingham als Brian Hines geborene britische Rockmusiker (Gitarre, E-Bass, Keyboard, Mundharmonika), Sänger und Songwriter Denny Laine (Bild) ist am 5. Dezember 2023 in Naples (Florida, USA) gestorben. 1964 war er Mitgründer der Band The Moody Blues. Auf der ersten LP der Band, «The Magnificent Moodies» mit dem Nr.-1-Hit «Go now», war Denny Laine als Sänger der Frontmann, und er spielte Gitarre und Mundharmonika. 1971 bis 1981 war der zweifache Grammy-Gewinner Laine Mitglied bei Paul McCartneys Wings, wo er auch als Co-Autor unter anderem des Hits «Mull of Kintyre» wirkte. Denny Laine of Wings, Moody Blues dies in Naples. McCartney calls him ‚a great talent.‘

The former The Moody Blues and Wings member had struggled with various health issues since getting COVID-19 last year.

«I am very saddened to hear that my ex-bandmate, Denny Laine, has died,» McCartney wrote on Facebook. «I have many fond memories of my time with Denny: from the early days when The Beatles toured with the Moody Blues. Our two bands had a lot of respect for each other and a lot of fun together.

»Denny joined Wings at the outset. He was an outstanding vocalist and guitar player.»

Denny Laine, lead singer of the Moody Blues and a guitarist with Sir Paul McCartney’s band Wings, has died at the age of 79

His wife Elizabeth Hines said he died after a long battle with lung disease.

Among other achievements, Laine sang on the Moody Blues‘ multi-million selling Go Now and co-wrote the Wings hit Mull of Kintyre.

Denny Laine, star musician with Moody Blues and Wings, dies aged 79

Born Brian Frederick Hines in Birmingham, 1944, he took on a snappier stage name and began his first band in his teens: Denny Laine and the Diplomats, whose singer was the future glam star Roy Wood and whose drummer was the future ELO member Bev Bevan.

Along with other rising stars of the «Brumbeat» scene of blues and R&B, he formed the Moody Blues in 1964. The group had a big hit from the off with their second single, Go Now, a cover version of Bessie Banks’ R&B ballad. Powered by one of the most distinctive, melancholic openings to a pop song ever – a downbeat Laine soulfully singing «we’ve already said goodbye» to a newly ex-lover – and a stunningly harmonised chorus, Laine’s hurt, jazzy delivery of the song’s top line helped make it a huge success, reaching No 1 in the UK and No 10 in the US.

Laine also pursued a solo career, releasing three albums under his own name while with Wings, and another nine after his departure from the band. His last solo album, The Blue Musician, was released in 2008. Earlier this year he revealed he was working on new material, and embarked on a Acoustic Songs & Stories US tour, playing music from Wings and the Moody Blues as well as solo material and covers. His final show was in Richmond, Virginia in July.  

«You never stop creating, and therefore you’re never 100 percent satisfied,» Laine  told Guitar World in January. «You can’t be. But when the finished product goes out and a lot of people are happy with it, that’s good enough encouragement for me.»

Aside from Paul and Linda McCartney, Laine was Wings‘ only constant member

After his departure from the Moody Blues, Laine began a solo career, and would also join – for a short time in 1970 – Ginger Baker’s Air Force, appearing on the band’s self-titled debut live album. 

During this time, though, the Beatles – with whom Laine became acquainted during his time with the Moody Blues – were going their separate ways. For his new band, Wings, Paul McCartney approached Laine, who quickly accepted a spot in the group.
