DER US-AMERIKANISCHE RAPPER ROB BASE IST GESTORBEN

Der am 18. Mai 1967 in Harlem (New York City) als Robert Ginyard geborene Rapper und Hip-Hop-Produzent Rob Base (Bild links) ist am 22. Mai 2026 gestorben. Zusammen mit Rodney «Skip» Bryce bildete er das international bekannte Hip-Hop-Duo Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock. Ihre erste Single «DJ Interview» (1986) wurde auf einer Kompilation des Labels World to World veröffentlicht. Dann erschien «Make it Hot», ein Song, mit dem sie für verschiedene Hip-Hop-Gruppen eröffnen durften. 1988 nahmen sie das Lied «It Takes Two» auf, das auf einem Sample des Liedes «Think (about It)» von Lyn Collins beruhte; es wurde ein grosser Erfolg. Als Sample wurde es unter anderem von Snoop Dogg, Gang Starr, Girl Talk und 2NE1 verwendet. Es erschien auf den Soundtracks von «Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas» (2004) und des Films «The Proposal» (2009). Auch das dazugehörige gleichnamige Album wurde ein Erfolg, erreichte Platz 31 der Billboard 200 und brachte dem Duo eine Platin-Schallplatte ein. (*)

Born Robert Ginyard on May 18, 1967, Base and E-Z Rock were childhood friends who met in the fourth grade and grew up in Harlem. They were inspired by a local group called Crash Crew. “We used to watch them and looked up to them. We said to ourselves, ‘This is something that we want to do.’ Seven of us put together a group; a lot of them didn’t take it seriously, but me and him did,” Base told Rolling Stone in 2014.

In his 1988 hit song, “It Takes Two,” with DJ E-Z Rock, he begins with, “I wanna rock right now / I’m Rob Base and I came to get down / I’m not internationally known / But I’m known to rock the microphone.” It was featured as one of Rolling Stone’s 500 best songs of all time. “The 1988 tune remains the single greatest use of a looped drum break in rap history,” the magazine wrote in 2018. It called it “the hip-hop equivalent” to the guitar solo in “Stairway to Heaven.” The song was also included in VH1’s list of the 100 greatest hip-hop songs in 2008. The single was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of more than one million copies.

Alongside E-Z Rock, who died in 2014 from complications of diabetes, Base was instrumental in cross-pollinating hip-hop and house music and bringing them to the mainstream in the 1980s. Their smash “It Takes Two” reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart in 1988 followed by “Get on the Dance Floor,” which topped the same chart. In the decades since, “It Takes Two” has become a cultural touchstone, sampled by everyone from Snoop Dogg to Black Eyed Peas and used in films including 2009’s “The Proposal” and 2010’s “Iron Man 2.”

Tributes began pouring in for Base on Friday evening. «He WAS internationally known and he DID rock the microphone,» comedian Dane Cook wrote on X. «One of my favorite songs ever. Rob Base filled the airwaves with hit music. RIP man.» NFL Hall-of-Fame football star Deion Sanders wrote: «Prayers to Rob Base entire family and loved ones. He was a legend to me.»

Die weiße Baseballkappe schief auf dem Kopf, eine dicke Goldkette über der Trainingsjacke – so läuft Rob Base im Video von „It Takes Two“ durch New York. Um ihn herum tanzen junge Leute, er rappt lässig über den schnellen Beat. Darunter liegt in Endlosschleife ein gesampeltes „Yeah-Woo“.

Zusammen mit DJ E-Z Rock und dem Produzenten William Hamilton hatte Rob Base das perfekt verschraubt. Beim Zuhören nickt automatisch der Kopf und zuckt das Bein. Kein Wunder, dass der Song im Sommer 1988 ständig in den New Yorker Clubs und Radiostationen lief und schließlich auch ein Charterfolg wurde. Später sampelten unzählige andere Künstler wie Snoop Dogg und die Black Eyed Peas den ungemein einflussreichen Titel.

Der Beat seines Songs »It Takes Two« war für den Hip-Hop, was das Gitarrensolo von »Stairway to Heaven« für den Rock war.

»Yeah – Woo!« So einfach kann man Musikgeschichte schreiben. Rob Base und sein Schulfreund DJ EZ-Rock aus Harlem waren Anfang 20, als sie 1988 noch schnell ein Demo für ihre Plattenfirma aufnehmen wollten. Sie hörten sich gemeinsam durch alte Platten: Rob Base mochte den 1972 von James Brown produzierten Funksong Think (about it) von Lyn Collins, EZ-Rock mochte den Beat des Electrotracks Set it off, einen Electrotrack von Strafe aus dem Jahr 1985, und beiden gefiel das Intro von Space Dust der Galactic Force Band. Sie sampelten ihre Lieblingsstellen aus den drei Platten, darunter auch das »Yeah – Woo«, und Rob Base schrieb dazu ein paar spontane Reime: »I’m not internationally known / But I’m known to rock the microphone.«
