Wendell Holmes (Bild), der am 19. Dezember 1943 in Norfolk (Virginia) geborene Gitarrist, Pianist, Sänger und Songwriter der US-amerikanischen Soul- und Bluesband The Holmes Brothers, ist in Rosedale (Maryland) im Alter von 71 Jahren gestorben.

Obwohl sie (The Holmes Brothers, Red.) schon jahrelang zusammen in Harlem auftraten, wurden sie erst in den späten 1980er-Jahren bekannt. 1992 unterzeichneten sie bei Peter Gabriels Real World Records als erste amerikanische Gruppe des bekannten World Music Labels. Von da an ging es mit ihrer Karriere steil bergauf, so traten sie mit Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Merle Haggard, Keith Richards, Al Green, Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Levon Helm, Rosanne Cash, Odetta und anderen auf bzw. nahmen mit ihnen Alben auf.

In September 2014, The Holmes Brothers were honored with a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor the United States bestows upon its folk and traditional artists, among other honors throughout their career.

Paul Kahn, Holmes› manager, says the 71-year-old musician died Friday at his home in Rosedale, Maryland.

Kahn says Wendell Holmes was a natural musical talent, and said his most popular song was the soul ballad «We Meet, We Part, We Remember.»

I’m very sad to hear about the passing of Wendell Holmes – a devastating loss to his family, friends and the music world. I’ve known The Holmes Brothers for quite some time. We’ve played many a concert together and kept meeting at blues places and festivals around the world. We first got together when they sang and played on my album «Lifeline» that included the song READY FOR THE RIDE (that has been sung at many a funeral since).
