The trio expanded the stylistic vocabulary of hip-hop in the 1980s and ’90s, but its early experiments with sampling led to legal troubles, and the group’s longtime exclusion from streaming.

Long Island rapper’s word play and lyricism helped the group become legendary
Trugoy, who had recently been going by the name Dave, and was also known as Plug Two, had been open about his bout with congestive heart failure in recent years. In De La Soul’s 2017 «Royalty Capes» video, Trugoy candidly spoke about how his ailing health kept him from performing.

His death comes just weeks before De La Soul’s classic catalog is set to finally arrive on streaming and digital platforms on March 3
Their 1989 debut — the album 3 Feet High and Rising, peaking at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 24 on the Billboard 200 — featured the breakthrough single «Me Myself and I,» which topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, reached No. 34 on the Hot 100 and was nominated for a best rap performance Grammy. 3 Feet High and Rising is often cited as the start of what’s referred to as «alternative hip-hop.»

Over the course of their early albums, beginning with Three Feet High and Rising and continuing with De La Soul Is Dead in 1991, Buhloone Mindstate in 1993 and Stakes Is High in 1996, De La Soul became avatars for future generations of hip-hop nerds and geeks inspired by the group’s commitment to creativity and cleverness. Brooklyn’s Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), who also idolized De La Soul as a teenager, explained to me in 1999: «They weren’t just arbitrarily creative. They were really intense with mad thought and focus. [No one] thought hip hop could be like that.»

Tributes poured in on social media shortly after the news broke Sunday
«Dave! It was a honor to share so many stages with you,» wrote rapper Big Daddy Kane on Instagram.
BMI Remembers Rapper/Songwriter Trugoy the Dove of De La Soul
Trugoy, (a.k.a. David Jolicoeur), as one-third of the renowned Amityville, Long Island-based hip-hop trio, helped expand the parameters of the genre in the late ’80s and ’90s by infusing De La Soul’s playful, innovative music with elements of jazz and psychedelia, as well as setting a template via intricate wordplay and trailblazing use of samples.

Sadly, his death comes just weeks before the pioneering hip-hop group’s key catalog will finally become available on streaming services. Their 1989 album, «3 Feet High and Rising,» is universally recognized as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, but has been held back from streaming services due to longstanding legal battles over sample clearances and other matters.
