Der am 13. Oktober 1940 in Little Rock (Arkansas) als Ferell Sanders geborene US-amerikanische Tenorsaxofonist, Komponist, Bandleader und Multiinstrumentalist Pharoah Sanders (Bild) ist am 24. September 2022 in Los Angeles gestorben. Den Künstlernamen Pharoah verdankte er Sun Ra, mit dem er in New York Anfang der 1960er-Jahre gemeinsam auftrat. An der Seite von John Coltrane entwickelte Sanders die ersten Formen des Free Jazz. Nach Coltranes Tod arbeitete Pharoah Sanders mit dessen Witwe Alice Coltrane weiter. Der grosse Saxofonist Ornette Coleman bezeichnete Sanders als «den vielleicht besten Tenorsaxofonisten der Welt». Mit «The Creator Has A Masterplan» schuf Sanders einen der einflussreichsten Jazz-Hits. Pharoah Sanders gilt auch als einer der Begründer des Ethno-Jazz, wobei er den Islam und die spirituellen Traditionen Afrikas oft in seine Arbeiten einbezog und zum Thema seiner Musik machte. Einen grossen Alterserfolg durfte Sanders 2021 gemeinsam mit dem Londoner Electro-Musiker und DJ Floating Points und dem London Symphony Orchestra erleben.

After learning of the jazz great’s deaths, countless collaborators, friends, and admirers of Pharoah Sanders have posted tributes in his honor, including Sun Ra Arkestra, Nigel Godrich, Badbadnotgood, Low, Strand of Oaks, the Bug, Warren Defever, and Yasmin Williams. «My beautiful friend passed away this morning. I am so lucky to have known this man, and we are all blessed to have his art stay with us forever. Thank you Pharoah,» wrote Floating Points.

Sanders’ complex and structurally fluid instrumental ideas would come to influence subsequent generations of musicians, including the L.A. scene that produced Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, Madlib, Carlos Niño and Terrace Martin.

In a 2020 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sanders was soft-spoken and would reply to questions with single-sentence answers. When asked about his famous work «The Creator Has a Master Plan» and whether the state of the world made him doubt any grand design, his answer was short: «The creator has a master plan. That’s it.»

Die meditative, neunteilige Suite «Promises» war im zweiten Pandemie-Jahr genau die Sorte Musik mit spirituellem Tiefgang und emotionalem Hoffnungsfunken, die eine gebeutelte Menschheit brauchte.
