ZUM TOD DER BRASILIANISCHEN SÄNGERIN GAL COSTA

Die am 26. September 1945 in Salvador da Bahía als Maria da Graça Costa Penna Burgos geborene brasilianische Sängerin Gal Costa (Bild) ist am 9. November 2022 in São Paulo gestorben. Ab 1967 war sie Teil des Tropicalismo. Landesweite Bekanntheit erreichte sie mit dem Hit «Divino Maravilhoso» (Wunderbare Gottheit) und mit dem von Caetano Veloso für sie komponierten Lied «Baby». Neben Veloso arbeitete Gal Costa u.a. mit Maria Bethânia, Tom Zé, Gilberto Gil und Jorge Ben zusammen. Sie galt als grösste Sängerin der populären Musik Brasiliens. Gal Costa hat neben ihren konventionellen Auftritten auch experimentelle Konzerte geboten. (*)

The iconic singer, who was well known for her fusion of different genres, burst onto the Brazilian music scene alongside future legends Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Maria Bethânia. Costa was also a prominent member of Brazil’s Tropicália (or Tropicalismo) movement, which blended musical styles in the 1960s, including traditional and avant-garde sounds.

Recording in Portuguese, Spanish and English and performing at numerous festivals, exhibitions and concerts, Costa sang compositions such as Ary Barroso’s «Aquarela do Brasil,» Tom Jobim’s «Dindi,» Jorge Ben Jor’s «Que Pena» and Veloso’s «Baby.»

Costa was scheduled to perform at the Primavera Sound festival in Sao Paulo last weekend but canceled, CNN Brasil reported.

News of her death led to an outpouring of condolences online. «Gal Costa was one of the world’s greatest singers and one of our main artists who brought the name and sounds of Brazil to the entire planet,» Brazil’s President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wrote on Twitter.

And during the years of Brazil’s dictatorship, her trademark hippie style and often revealing clothing made her a symbol of defiance of the military authorities.

Gilberto Gil, who worked closely with Costa throughout both of their careers, said he was «very sad and shaken by the death of my Gaúcha sister Gal Costa».

Costa was a vocal supporter of Lula throughout his recent presidential campaign. When news broke of his win in Brazil’s presidential elections just two weeks ago, she posted a picture on Instagram with the caption: «Love won against hate! President Lula!»

Es war ein Zufall, der eine der größten Sängerinnen Brasiliens mit zwei der größten Künstler des Landes zusammenführte. Über zwei Schulfreundinnen, Schwestern, lernte Maria da Graça Costa Penna Burgos die späteren Ehemänner der beiden kennen, Gilberto Gil und Caetano Veloso. Mit gerade einmal 19 Jahren sang sie schon erste Lieder der beiden, darunter das stolze «Eu vim da Bahía» (Ich kam aus Bahía). Der Bundesstaat steht wie kaum ein anderer in Brasilien für die Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), und sowohl Gal Costa, wie sie sich später verkürzt nannte, als auch die beiden jeweils drei Jahre älteren Gil und Veloso kommen aus dem Mekka der Popmusik des Landes. Zu dem Trio gehört auch noch die Schwester Velosos, die nicht minder berühmte Sängerin Maria Bethânia.

Costa galt als eine Muse der revolutionären «Tropicália»-Bewegung, die auch «Tropicalismo» genannt wird. Die Musik dieser Bewegung vermischte traditionelle Stile wie den Samba und die Bossa Nova mit Rock und Beat und anderen modernen Elementen. Der «Tropicalismo» hatte in seiner Experimentierfreudigkeit und Weltoffenheit auch eine politische Stoßrichtung, indem er sich gegen den Autoritarismus und die kulturell konservative Grundhaltung der damaligen Militärdiktatur richtete.
