Zum Tod des britischen Bluesmusikers und -sängers John Mayall

Der am 29. November 1933 in Macclesfield (Cheshire, GB) geborene britische Bluesmusiker und -sänger, Komponist, Songwriter und Bandleader John Mayall (Bild) ist am 22. Juli 2024 in seiner Wahlheimat Los Angeles gestorben. Er gilt neben Alexis Korner als einer der Väter des britischen Blues. Mayall zählte zu den Pionieren, die diese Musikrichtung von den Wurzeln zu experimentellen Formen weiterentwickelt haben. Früh in seiner Karriere traf Mayall auf später weltbekannt gewordene Musiker und förderte diese. (*) Seine Bands hiessen Powerhouse Four, Blues Syndicate und - am berühmtesten - Bluesbreakers. Musiker wie Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie und Mick Taylor machten in dieser Band bedeutende Karriereschritte. Schon früh erweiterte Mayall den Blues z.B. um psychedelische, rockige und jazzige Elemente. Als richtungsweisend gilt das mit Jon Mark und Johnny Almond eingespielte Album «The Turning Point» (1969).

It is with heavy hearts that we bear the news that John Mayall passed away peacefully in his California home yesterday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by loving family.

Health issues that forced John to end his epic touring career have finally led to peace for one of this world’s greatest road warriors. John Mayall gave us ninety years of tireless efforts to educate, inspire and entertain.

In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, John reflected, «[blues] is about – and it’s always been about – that raw honesty with which [it expresses] our experiences in life, something which all comes together in this music, in the words as well. Something that is connected to us, common to our experiences.» That raw honesty, connection, community and playing of his will continue to affect the music and culture we experience today, and for generations to come.

An appointed OBE (Officer of the British Empire), 2x Grammy-nominated artist and recent inductee to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, John is survived by his 6 children, Gaz, Jason, Red, Ben, Zak and Samson, 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also surrounded with love by his previous wives, Pamela and Maggie, his devoted secretary, Jane, and his close friends. We, the Mayall family, cannot thank his fans and long-list of bandmembers enough for the support and love we were blessed to experience secondhand over the last six decades.

John closed that same Guardian interview by reflecting further on the blues, «To be honest, I don’t think anyone really knows exactly what it is. I just can’t stop playing it.» Keep on playing the blues somewhere, John. We love you.

The years of the mid-1960s, John Mayall said, «were a special period in British music history» – the foundation of all today’s rock.

«Our source was all the American black music that Americans weren’t listening to,» he said. «People mention Eric Clapton, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, the Animals, the Rolling Stones: all these people came out of a small time period – four years. We were all so dedicated to where this music came from and the injustice of the fact that the blues was not appreciated in America. We were damned if we were going to let it go on being unnoticed.»

His father also played the guitar and banjo, and his records of boogie-woogie piano captivated his teenage son, who learnt to play the piano one hand at a time (a year on the left, then a year on the right) so he «wouldn’t get all tangled up». He also performed on the guitar and harmonica, and sang in a distinctive, strained-sounding voice.

Dubbed «the Godfather of British Blues,» John Mayall was a nurturing figure to a slew of musicians at the start of their careers. Mayall formed the Bluesbreakers in the early 1960s after moving to London, and the band’s shifting lineup included a post-Yardbirds, pre-Cream Eric Clapton, who recorded with Mayall on the highly influential 1966 LP Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton. John Mayall, Legendary Pioneer of British Blues, Dead at 90

Clapton, who called Mayall his «mentor,» said in a tribute Wednesday, «He taught me that it was okay to just play the music you wanted to play without dressing it up or making anybody else like it. To listen to myself… He taught me all I really know, and gave me the courage and enthusiasm to express myself without fear, without limit.»

The musician’s most revered body of work was his debut LP, Blues Breakers, which Rolling Stone ranked Number 195 on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2003. Mayall released several albums in the Seventies after moving to Los Angeles in 1969. He was appointed Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005 and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2016.

The Bluesbreakers also featured guitarist Mick Taylor, who joined the Rolling Stones after Mayall’s recommendation. «So sad to hear of John Mayall’s passing,» Mick Jagger said in a tribute Wednesday. «He was a great pioneer of British blues and had a wonderful eye for talented young musicians, including Mick Taylor – who he recommended to me after Brian Jones died – ushering in a new era for the Stones.»

Wenn der 1933 unweit von Manchester in Macclesfield geborene John Mayall von frühester Jugend an einen Sinn für die Klagegesänge des Blues entwickelte, dann folgte er zunächst der Plattensammlung seines Vaters, eines Amateurgitarristen, und der Begegnung mit einem Album von Lonnie Johnson. Den Rest besorgten drei schwere Jahre als Soldat im Koreakrieg und eine musikalische Aufbruchszeit, in der sich Fragen nach legitimer und illegitimer Aneignung gar nicht stellten – auch nicht für die, deren Tradition sein weißer British Blues belieh.

Jazzsensibilität

Das britische «Blues-Wunder» geht direkt auf John Mayall zurück. Es gründet auf seiner feinen Jazzsensibilität – und bedurfte klangsinnlicher Erweiterungen, die Mayall etwa durch Aufwertung der Hammond-Orgel erzielte.

Auf Bare Wires (1968) spielte plötzlich John Hiseman die Drums, Dick Heckstall-Smith intonierte das Saxofon – der Kern der späteren Colosseum wurde hier zusammengeknetet. Verbissen geübt wurde in Mister Mayalls expandierendem Blues-Labor kaum jemals. Der Meister hieß seine Alumni zu seinen Füßen Platz zu nehmen und bat sie, den Platten der von ihm verehrten Delta- oder Chicago-Blues-Heroen ehrfürchtig zu lauschen.

Das große Geld verdienten sowieso andere. Immerhin Room to Move wurde so etwas wie ein Hit. John Mayall schreckte in späteren Jahren auch vor Middle-of-the-Soul nicht zurück. Aber welcher andere europäische Blues-Musiker hat schließlich mit Jazzern wie Blue Mitchell oder Red Holloway gejammt? Bis zuletzt «alive and kicking», nahm der in Kalifornien lebende Mayall feine bis wunderbare Alben auf – und tourte ohne Unterlass. Seine letzte Platte The Sun Is Shining Down erschien 2022.

Eine praktizierende Hochschule für die höchstbegabten englischen Instrumentalisten. Bei Mayall holten sie den letzten Schliff, um die Pop- und Rockwelt zu erobern. Bezeichnenderweise löste Mayall seine jeweiligen Formationen immer dann auf, wenn seine Schüler besser wurden als er selbst.

John Mayall war der Lehrer der Pop-Stars

In den sechziger Jahren wurden die Briten nicht nur von der Beatlemania erfasst, sondern auch von einem Blues-Fieber.
