ZUM TOD DES KANADISCHEN GITARRISTEN, SÄNGERS UND SONGWRITERS ROBBIE ROBERTSON
Der am 5. Juli 1943 in Toronto geborene kanadische Gitarrist, Sänger und Songwriter Robbie Robertson (Bild) ist am 9. August 2023 in Los Angeles gestorben. Der von Robertson geschriebene Titel «The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down» zählt zu den bekanntesten Liedern von The Band. «The Band – The Last Waltz» ist die Dokumentation des legendären Abschiedskonzertes. (*)

Tributes from fellow Canadians included actor Kiefer Sutherland, who tweeted the loss was «heartbreaking» and that «Canada has lost an icon, and music has lost a poet and a scholar.»
Musician Ron Sexsmith praised Robertson’s lasting impact, tweeting that he «changed the direction of music in the late ‘60s from psychedelic to a more roots based-approach.»
From their years as Bob Dylan’s masterful backing group to their own stardom as embodiments of old-fashioned community and virtuosity, The Band profoundly influenced popular music in the 1960s and ‘70s, first by literally amplifying Dylan’s polarizing transition from folk artist to rock star and then by absorbing the works of Dylan and Dylan’s influences as they fashioned a new sound immersed in the American past.
Robbie Robertson, beloved frontman of the Band, dies at 80
«Long before we ever met, his music played a central role in my life — me and millions and millions of other people all over this world,» Martin Scorsese, Robertson’s close friend and frequent collaborator, said in a statement. «The Band’s music, and Robbie’s own later solo music, seemed to come from the deepest place at the heart of this continent, its traditions and tragedies and joys.»

Robbie Robertson, Leader of The Band, Dies at 80
Robertson did what turned out to be his final interview just two weeks ago with Variety, talking about his 55 years of collaborating with Scorsese, on up through «Flower Moon,» which is set to come out later this year. «We’re in awe ourselves that our brotherhood has outlasted everything,» he said of his work with the director. «We’ve been through it; we’ve been there and back. I am so proud of our friendship and our work. It’s been just a gift in life.» (The interview will run in full at a later date.)

Canadian Songwriter Captured American Spirit
As the chief songwriter and guitarist for The Band, he offered a rustic vision of his adopted country that helped inspire the genre that came to be known as Americana.

Mr. Robertson was widely credited with helping forge a music genre known as Americana that brought together folk, country and rock and leaned heavily on traditions of storytelling and sense of place, contrasting with the emerging psychedelic sound in the 1960s.
The throwback sensibilities of the Band’s music carried influences of some of Mr. Robertson’s early collaborators, including Bob Dylan, and helped inspire bands such as the Grateful Dead with «Workingman’s Dead» (1970) and Elton John’s «Tumbleweed Connection» (1971) with songs of struggles, lean times and simple pleasures.

Stevie van Zandt, a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, said Robertson was a «good friend» and «underrated brilliant guitar player».
Canadian singer Bryan Adams posted a photo of Robertson and wrote: «Thanks for the amazing music and the great hangs.»

Robbie Robertson, guitariste canadien de The Band, est mort à 80 ans
Robertson a écrit les morceaux les plus connus de son groupe The Band durant les décennies 1960 et 1970: «The Weight», «The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down» et «Up On Cripple Creek».
