DIE US-AMERIKANISCHE SCHRIFTSTELLERIN ANNE RICE IST GESTORBEN
Die am 4. Oktober 1941 als Howard Allen O'Brien in New Orleans (Louisiana) geborene US-amerikanische Schriftstellerin Anne Rice (Bild) ist am 11. Dezember 2021 in Rancho Mirage (Kalifornien) gestorben. Sie wurde vor allem mit ihrem zwölfbändigen Zyklus von Vampirromanen bekannt, der «Chronik der Vampire» (OT: The Vampire Chronicles).*

Rice’s biggest success was her first novel, «Interview with the Vampire,» which was published in 1976 and introduced the character of the vampire Lestat, who would be the central character in the 13-book Chronicles series, the most recent of which was published in 2018.

Rice’s 1976 novel «Interview With the Vampire» was later adapted, with a script by Rice, into the 1994 movie directed by Neil Jordan and starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. It’s also set to be adapted again in an upcoming TV series on AMC and AMC+ set to premiere next year.

The horror legend Ramsey Campbell said Rice wrote «in the great tradition of the gothic, both thematically and in her prose». «I would argue it’s a specifically female lineage that stretches from the classical gothics but in particular from Mary Shelley, in its humanisation of the monster and the way it accords him a thoroughly literate voice,» Campbell said.
