ZUM TOD DES BRITISCHEN ROCKSÄNGERS, PIANISTEN UND KOMPONISTEN GARY BROOKER (PROCOL HARUM)

Der am 29. Mai 1945 in Hackney (London) geborene britische Rocksänger, Pianist und Komponist Gary Brooker (Bild) ist am 19. Februar 2022 gestorben. Er war Gründer der Gruppe Procol Harum. Berühmt wurde diese insbesondere mit dem von Brooker und Keith Reid komponierten, 1967 veröffentlichten Song «A Whiter Shade of Pale», der zu einem Welterfolg und einem der prägenden Lieder der Hippie-Ära Ende der 1960er-Jahre wurde. 1977 begann Gary Brooker eine Solokarriere. Auf einigen Alben wirkten ehemalige Procol-Harum-Mitglieder und Gastmusiker wie Phil Collins, George Harrison und Eric Clapton mit. Brooker selbst hat als Gastmusiker für Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Tim Renwick, Frankie Miller, Mickey Jupp, The Hollies, Alan Parsons Project, Allan Clarke, Kate Bush, Eric Clapton und Ad Visser gearbeitet. Brooker war bis zuletzt musikalisch aktiv, so waren für 2022 und 2023 noch Konzerte mit ihm angekündigt.*

With the deepest regret we must announce the death on 19 February 2022 of Gary Brooker MBE, singer, pianist and composer of Procol Harum, and a brightly-shining, irreplaceable light in the music industry. Aged 76, he had been receiving treatment for cancer, but died peacefully at home.

From his earliest onstage duets with his musician father, through his youthful recording career with Southend’s The Paramounts, Gary exhibited and developed a highly-individual talent. His first single with Procol Harum, 1967’s «A Whiter Shade of Pale», is widely regarded as defining «The Summer of Love», yet it could scarcely have been more different from the characteristic records of that era.

«Neugierige Ohren»

Irgendwie beruhigend, dass auch der Komponist nie so richtig begriffen hat, worum es in «A Whiter Shade of Pale» eigentlich genau geht. Fest steht: Es ist seit Jahrzehnten die herbei gesehnte «Eng-Tanz-Hymne» auf Teenager-Partys. Textdichter Keith Reid (75) behauptete zwar mal, er habe einen potentiellen «Verführer» im Sinn gehabt, der sich nach und nach Mut antrinkt, aber Gary Brooker sagte dazu in einem Interview, ihm persönlich reiche die «Atmosphäre» des Songs, die Musik sei eh wichtiger als der Text: «Der Song ist ja nicht richtig bluesy, eher etwas soulig, R’n’B war da noch nicht so richtig erfunden. Ich weiß nicht, wie man es nennen kann, weil da viele Verbindungen und Vermischungen sind. Musikalisch, textlich und die Art und Weise, wie ich den Song singe – da passiert eine ganze Menge.»
