Der am 10. November 1946 in London geborene britische Musikproduzent Roy Thomas Baker (Bild) ist am 12. April 2025 in Lake Havasu City (Arizona, USA) gestorben, wie in diesen Tagen bekannt wurde. Er war insbesondere berühmt für seine Arbeit an den ersten Alben der Rockband Queen. Baker war Koproduzent einiger der bekanntesten Songs von Queen, wie beispielsweise «Killer Queen», «You’re My Best Friend», «Bohemian Rhapsody», «Bicycle Race» und «Don’t Stop Me Now». Roy Thomas Baker produzierte zudem zahlreiche Alben der dänischen Rockgruppe Gasolin’ und der US-amerikanischen Band The Cars. Des Weiteren arbeitete er als Produzent für viele andere Musiker und Bands, dazu zählen u.a. Hawkwind, Ian Hunter, Dusty Springfield, Yes, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne, The Stranglers, The Darkness und The Smashing Pumpkins. (*)

Roy Thomas Baker, record producer behind Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ dies at 78

Known for his technological savvy and his discipline in the recording studio, Baker oversaw the creation of Queen’s first four albums, which spun off a varied assortment of singles in the early 1970s including the jaunty “Killer Queen,” the tender “You’re My Best Friend” and the almost comically elaborate “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which moves over six minutes from a show-tune-style intro through a densely arranged operatic sequence before climaxing in a hard-rock section that inspired a headbanging set piece in 1992’s “Wayne’s World” movie.

Baker is best known as the producer of Queen’s classic 1975 album «A Night at the Opera», including the hit single «Bohemian Rhapsody,» the Cars` 1978 self-titled debut and Journey’s first two albums with Steve Perry, 1978’s «Infinity» and 1979’s «Evolution»

He was born in Hampstead, London, and started his music career at the city’s Decca Studios when he was 14. Soon, he was an engineer at Trident Studios for Gus Dudgeon and Tony Visconti.

During that time, he engineered records by Dr. John, Yes, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Dusty Springfield and many others. Among his earliest successes as an engineer was his work on Free’s «All Right Now» from 1970 and T. Rex’s 1972 single «Bang a Gong (Get It On).»

Roy Thomas Baker, producteur iconique à l’origine de certains des plus grands chefs-d’œuvre du rock, est décédé à 78 ans, a annoncé sa famille ce mercredi 23 avril. Il s’est éteint le 12 avril à son domicile de Lake Havasu City, en Arizona. Les causes de sa mort n’ont pas été communiquées.

Figure de l’ombre, mais incontournable du rock britannique, il laisse derrière lui un héritage immense, marqué par des collaborations avec Queen, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Guns N’ Roses, ou encore The Smashing Pumpkins.
