Der am 18. Januar 1943 in Richmond (Virginia) geborene US-amerikanische Jazz-Schlagzeuger Al Foster (Bild) ist am 28. Mai 2025 in New York City gestorben. Er arbeitete bereits im Alter von sechzehn Jahren mit Hugh Masekela, später mit Ted Curson und Illinois Jacquet. Foster wirkte an zehn Alben der Band um Miles Davis mit. Danach gehörte Foster den Bands von Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins und Joe Henderson an und arbeitete u.a. auch mit Musikern wie Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Randy und Michael Brecker, Bill Evans, George Benson, Kenny Drew, Carmen McRae, Stan Getz, Toots Thielemans, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Dave Holland, Branford Marsalis, Sting, John McLaughlin, Michel Petrucciani und Dexter Gordon. In jüngerer Zeit war er häufig Partner von Sonny Rollins und McCoy Tyner und leitete ein eigenes Quartett. (*)

Al Foster, drummer for Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, has died

Al Foster, whose superbly alert and flexible drumming formed a swirling current in modern jazz for more than 60 years, propelling bands led by Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and many others, died (…) in his New York City apartment.

Foster had a strong yet supple beat, and the intuitive ability to shift his rhythmic balance to suit the musical setting. His swinging ride cymbal could convey the crisp authority of bebop or the deep pull of modal jazz, and he provided the thrashing backbeat in some prominent fusion bands.

He was probably best known for his long tenure with Miles Davis, who praised his ability to “keep the groove going forever.”

Mr. Foster came up emulating great bebop percussionists like Max Roach, but his most high-profile early gig came with Mr. Davis, who hired him in 1972, when he was refining an aggressive, funk-informed sound. Mr. Foster’s springy backbeats firmly anchored the band’s sprawling psychedelic jams.

In all contexts and styles, he retained a signature sound, one of in-the-pocket groove and an unusually prominent hi-hat in his comping patterns. (Foster also famously kept the hi-hat in a default closed position, opening it when sounding on the cymbal pair: a technique he called “reverse hi-hat.”) Foster was deeply versed in the history of jazz drums — citing in particular the influences of Joe Chambers and Art Taylor — but was resolute that history was a means to the end of developing a personal sound, on which he placed the highest priority.

His first musical idol was bebop drummer Max Roach, whose 1955 recording of «Cherokee» inspired a 12-year-old Foster to begin practicing every day on the drum kit his father had previously gifted him. The budding musician got his first experience working as a studio musician on Blue Mitchell’s 1964 album «The Thing to Do», which also featured a young Chick Corea. Foster’s big break, however, arrived a few years later, when Miles Davis saw him perform at a jazz club on New York’s Upper West Side and recruited the drummer to join his band.

Le batteur Al Foster est décédé

Al Foster apprend la batterie à l’âge de 13 ans et enregistre son premier album avec Blue Mitchell 7 ans plus tard. Influencé par le batteur Max Roach, c’est son père qui va lui faire écouter pour la première fois Miles Davis, à l’Apollo Theater, en 1958. Le trompettiste va ensuite le repérer en 1972 et entamer avec lui une fructueuse collaboration: «Il m’a frappé parce qu’il avait un tel rythme et il pouvait juste le poser comme cela. C’était le genre de chose que je cherchais. Il pourrait mettre en place le rythme pour tout le monde et le garder jusqu’à l’infini» (Miles Davis).

Sein Plattendebüt war 1964 mit dem Trompeter Blue Mitchell, seine Karriere zieht einen weiten Bogen mit Stationen bei historischen Größen, bei Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock.

Bei aller Vielseitigkeit, seine Vorliebe gehörte den swingenden Grooves. Und er, der als einziger mit Miles sowohl vor als auch nach dessen Rückzug aus der Öffentlichkeit in der zweiten Hälfte der 1970er gespielt hat, darf sich als Verdienst anrechnen, jenen, der nicht mehr swingen wollte, dann doch noch, auf „Amandla“ (1989), zu einem swinger überredet zu haben: zu „Mr. Pastorius“, gewidmet dem Monate zuvor verstorbenen Baßgitarristen.

Al Foster blieb bis ins hohe Alter aktiv, tourte international und unterrichtete regelmäßig. Mit seinem Tod verliert die Jazzszene eine Persönlichkeit, deren musikalische Haltung Generationen geprägt hat

Neben seiner langjährigen Rolle in verschiedenen Bands von Miles Davis trat Foster auch als Bandleader hervor. Alben wie «Mixed Roots», «Brandyn» oder «Reflections» zeigen ihn als Musiker mit eigenem Profil, der stilistische Offenheit mit struktureller Präzision verband.
