ZUM TOD DER US-AMERIKANISCHEN MODE-IKONE, INNENARCHITEKTIN UND INFLUENCERIN IRIS APFEL

Die am 29. August 1921 in Queens (New York City) geborene US-amerikanische Geschäftsfrau, Innenarchitektin und Mode-Ikone Iris Apfel (Bild) ist am 1. März 2024 in ihrem Haus in Palm Beach (Florida) im Alter von 102 Jahren gestorben. Mit ihrem Mann Carl Apfel (1914–2015) gründete sie 1950 die Textilfirma Old World Weavers, in der sie bis zu ihrer Pensionierung 1992 tätig war. Sie hatte auch mehrere Aufträge für das Weisse Haus in Washington, D.C. Ihre Ausstellung «Rara Avis» (2005) im Metropolitan Museum of Art war die erste Ausstellung über Mode und Accessoires, die das Museum einer noch lebenden Person widmete, die keine Modedesignerin ist. Weiter wurde Iris Apfel durch ihre Auftritte im Internet und im TV bekannt, vor allem durch die Dokumentation «Iris» von Albert Maysles (2014). Auch als Influencerin war Iris Apfel aktiv; sie hatte drei Mio. Follower auf Instagram und 215'000 Follower auf TikTok. Im Februar 2019 schloss Apfel mit 97 Jahren bei der Modellagentur IMG einen Vertrag als Model ab. Bei dieser Agentur ist beispielsweise auch Kate Moss unter Vertrag. (*)

Throughout her career, Apfel wore many different hats, from textile guru to interior designer, visiting professor, style icon, brand ambassador and more. And at 97 years old, she signed with IMG Models in 2019, noting at the time that designer Tommy Hilfiger connected her with the agency. «I’m very excited and very grateful,» she said.
