Francis Ford Coppola, Al Pacino, Barbra Streisand and More Pay Tribute to James Caan: «An Incredible, Towering Actor»

As an actor, Caan wasn’t always as tough as many people thought he was onscreen. Apart from his role as Corleone, he sang and danced in 1982’s «Kiss Me Goodbye» and in 1975’s «Funny Lady,» where he played Billy Rose to Barbra Streisand’s Fanny Brice and wound up nominated for a Golden Globe. As an author in 1990’s «Misery,» he found himself at the mercy of Kathy Bates’ obsessed fan Annie Wilkes.
And sure, he was on Santa’s Naughty List as Walter in 2003’s «Elf,» but Will Ferrell’s giddy character, Buddy, (Walter’s long-lost son) eventually fixed that.

James Caan, the curly-haired tough guy known to movie fans as the hotheaded Sonny Corleone of «The Godfather» and to television audiences as both the dying football player in the classic weeper «Brian’s Song» and the casino boss in «Las Vegas,» has died.

He proved, beyond his tough-guy exterior, a versatile performer of wry expressiveness and unexpected vulnerability
James Caan, a Hollywood leading man of the 1970s who memorably displayed his tough-guy screen presence as the trigger-happy Mafioso Sonny Corleone in «The Godfather» but who also proved, beyond his macho exterior, a versatile performer of wry expressiveness and unexpected vulnerability, died July 6 at 82.

Remembering James Caan: He Played Hotheads and Roughnecks, Brilliantly Exposing Their Humanity
It in no way shortchanges the brilliance of James Caan, who died Wednesday at 82, to point out that he had a special gift for playing insensitive men. He was a gruff, tough, raging, muscular actor, with a ramrod physicality and an imposing look: the wiry curls of brownish-blond hair, the handsome planed face that seemed carved out of granite, the mouth set in a scowl that was a challenge and often a threat.
