Die am 5. September 1940 in Chicago als Jo Raquel Tejada geborene US-amerikanische Schauspielerin Raquel Welch (Bild) ist am 15. Februar in Los Angeles gestorben. Sie war in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren eines der grossen Sexsymbole des europäischen und US-amerikanischen Kinos. Raquel Welch drehte an der Seite von Hollywood-Grössen wie Burt Reynolds, James Stewart, John Huston oder Frank Sinatra. Für ihre Rolle im Film «Die drei Musketiere» (1973) erhielt sie den Golden Globe als beste Komödien-Darstellerin.

Once called «a marvelous breathing monument to womankind,» she also was memorable in ‚Fantastic Voyage,‘ ‚Lady in Cement,‘ ‚100 Rifles‘ and ‚Myra Breckinridge.‘

Her success in Hollywood was due partly to talent, partly to perseverance, but mostly to hitting the genetic jackpot. Although she turned in several respectable performances — as a scientist’s assistant in Fantastic Voyage (1966), as Lilian Lust in Bedazzled (1967), as a transgender revolutionary in Myra Breckinridge (1970) — it was her strikingly photogenic features and voluptuous figure that catapulted her to international stardom.

The actress, with more than 70 film and television credits, got her start as a spokesmodel on a variety show, «Hollywood Palace,» and had a small role in the Elvis Presley film «Roustabout» in 1964.

Her career took off two years later, with the release of the science fiction film «Fantastic Voyage,» about a team of scientists shrunken and injected into a critically ill man’s body; and «One Million Years, B.C.,» a prehistoric drama that cast Welch as the cavewoman Loana, with the photos of her in a fur bikini becoming the foundation of the movie’s marketing campaign, while turning Welch into an international sex symbol. (The poster later became a central device in the acclaimed movie «The Shawshank Redemption.»)

Welch’s memoir «Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage» was published in 2010.

She became a successful businesswoman over time, launching «Raquel’s Total Beauty and Fitness Program» in the mid-’80s and more recently developing a line of wigs and hair extensions, as well as skin care products.

Raquel Welch arbeitete bis ins hohe Alter
