DER US-AMERIKANISCHE JAZZ-SCHLAGZEUGER ROY HAYNES IST GESTORBEN
Der am 13. März 1925 in Boston (Massachusetts) geborene US-amerikanische Jazz-Schlagzeuger Roy Haynes (Bild) ist am 12. November 2024 in Nassau County (New York) gestorben. Er war als Schlagzeuger Partner von Musikern wie Lester Young, Bud Powell und Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, Stan Getz, dem John Coltrane Quartet, Cannonball Adderley und ab 1968 von Chick Corea. Später war er auch Schlagzeuger bei Pat Metheny und Michel Petrucciani. Ab den 1960er-Jahren leitete Haynes auch eigene Bands, denen u. a. George Adams und Hannibal Marvin Peterson angehörten. 1962 nahm er mit einem Quartett aus Roland Kirk, Henry Grimes und Tommy Flanagan sein Album «Out of the Afternoon» auf, zu dem er auch eigene Kompositionen beisteuerte. 2011 erhielt Roy Haynes den Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Remarkably, he did so without significant alterations to his style, which was characterized by a bracing clarity — Snap Crackle was the nickname bestowed on him in the 1950s — along with locomotive energy and a slippery but emphatic flow.

One of the few remaining figures from jazz’s bebop revolution, Haynes long résumé included bandstand associations from the late 1940s and early 1950s with legendary artists like Lester Young, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Sarah Vaughan.
Haynes was the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, France’s Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Letttres, the Danish Jazzpar Award, numerous DownBeat awards and induction into the magazine’s Hall of Fame in 2004, plus apropos recognition in 1960 from Esquire as one of the Best Dressed Men in America.
Even as an octogenarian and nonagenarian, Haynes maintained a touring and recording schedule. For his 85th birthday, he celebrated the milestone with a stretch of shows at the Blue Note jazz club in Manhattan, the dates spiced with special guests like piano great Chick Corea, who had engaged the drummer for his epochal 1968 album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. More recently, in March 2018, Haynes was back at the Blue Note with his longstanding Fountain of Youth quartet for yet another birthday celebration.

One of the first significant engagements taken on by the great US jazz drummer Roy Haynes, who has died aged 99, was a lengthy stint with Lester Young. After two years in that role, from 1947 until 1949, he replaced Max Roach in Charlie Parker’s quintet. Then, in the early 1960s, John Coltrane chose him whenever his regular drummer, Elvin Jones, was elsewhere. Before any of that happened, Haynes had a fill-in job behind the drums in Louis Armstrong’s big band.

Roy Haynes, am 13. März 1925 in Boston geboren, hat den Jazz seit 1945 entscheidend mitgeprägt und war seit der Bebop-Revolution durch Altsaxofonist Charlie Parker und Trompeter Dizzy Gillespie einer der herausragenden Taktgeber des Jazz. Mit beiden spielte Haynes als 20-Jähriger, aber auch mit Trompeter Miles Davis, Pianist Thelonious Monk oder auch mit Sängerin Sarah Vaughan.
Von 1963 bis 1965 war er der Schlagzeuger an der Seite von Saxofonist John Coltrane und hatte sich stilistisch hier auch weiterentwickelt hin zu einer offeneren Spielweise.
Ab den 60er Jahren war Roy Haynes auch als Bandleader aktiv und er sah seine Bands auch immer als ein Sprungbrett für junge Jazzerinnen und Jazzer, etwa in den 2000er-Jahren mit seiner «Fountain of Youth»-Band. Bahnbrechend war auch Haynes‘ Zusammenarbeit mit Pianist Chick Corea und Bassist Miroslav Vitous in den 1980er-Jahren. Mit seinem komplexen, aber freifließenden Schlagzeugspiel in diesem Trio wurde Roy Haynes zu Inspirationsquelle für unzählige nachfolgende Drummer. Zeitlebens war er an den neuen Sounds des Jazz interessiert, in seinem Spiel war aber immer die tiefe Verwurzelung in der afroamerikanischen Musiktradition spürbar.

Roy Haynes stand immer etwas im Schatten der spektakulären Schlagzeugkollegen Max Roach und Elvin Jones. Er war denn auch der erste Ersatzmann im legendären Quartett von John Coltrane, sein Einfluss war aber nicht weniger gross. Tony Williams, der bahnbrechende Drummer bei Miles Davis, hat sich mit vielen anderen direkt auf ihn berufen und bezeichnete ihn sogar als Vorläufer von Elvin Jones. Letzterer hat die Mitmusiker vor sich hergetrieben, Haynes spielte fragmentarischer und liess die Musik strömen und fliessen. Er war der Navigator, der sein Spiel in einem musikalischen Zusammenhang sah.
