David Johansen, who fronted the New York Dolls and More, dies at 75
In the 1970s, he and the transgressive Dolls were proto-punk pioneers. He later refashioned himself as the pompadoured lounge lizard Buster Poindexter.
Mr. Johansen was prolific in multiple genres, from blues to calypso, and achieved his greatest commercial success in the late 1980s and early ’90s with his pompadoured lounge-lizard alter ego, Buster Poindexter. But his 1970s heyday with the New York Dolls, a band of lipstick-smeared men in love with trashy riffs and tough women, had the most cultural impact, inspiring numerous punk, heavy metal and alternative musicians.

Singer and actor, who scored a hit with «Hot Hot Hot» as his alter ego Buster Poindexter, dies after revealing Stage Four cancer battle last month.
The New York City-born Johansen was best known for his work in the pioneering punk group the New York Dolls, with whom — during the band’s initial run in the first half of the Seventies — he recorded a pair of influential glam punk albums, 1973’s New York Dolls and 1974’s Too Much Too Soon, with Johansen co-writing the bulk of the albums with guitarist Johnny Thunders.

David Johansen, frontman of the pioneering punk group New York Dolls and solo “Hot Hot Hot” hitmaker as his alter ego Buster Poindexter, has died
It’s hard to imagine New York City in the ‘70s becoming ground zero for punk and new wave music without the existence of the New York Dolls. Favoring simple, sloppy rock n’ roll over the increasingly complex and conceptual rock music of the early ‘70s, New York Dolls made up for what they lacked in technical mastery and professionalism with attitude, gender-bending fashion (women’s clothes and high heels) and gobs of lipstick.

Even as his health declined, Johansen had had a high profile in the last years of his life, thanks to a Showtime documentary co-directed by Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi
Johansen made public appearances to promote the doc alongside Scorsese when it came out in 2023. The film was based around the filming of what turned out to be Johansen’s final full gigs, at New York’s Cafe Carlyle right before the pandemic lockdown.

The singer, who also went on to record as Buster Poindexter, was fundamental in shaping the original aesthetic of punk rock
As the singer in the New York Dolls, Johansen was fundamental in the shaping of the aesthetic that would go on to define punk rock, merging elements of glam and hard rock with a distinctively anti-establishment attitude and resonating with an emerging generation of music fans.
