Der am 12. Januar 1926 in Perryville (Texas) geborene US-amerikanische Country-Sänger und -Musiker Ray Price (Bild) ist am 16. Dezember 2013 in Mount Pleasant (Texas) gestorben.

Als Ray Price 1996 in die Country Music Hall of Fame aufgenommen wurde, mussten die Verantwortlichen einräumen, dass diese Ehre überfällig gewesen sei. Auch mit dem Grammy wurde der Texaner ausgezeichnet, 1971 für «For The Good Times» und dann noch einmal 2008 für ein Duett mit Willie Nelson.

Seine Karriere erstreckte sich über sechs Jahrzehnte, in denen Price Hits wie For the Good Times und Crazy Arms sang. Er arbeitete unter anderem mit Hank Williams und Willie Nelson zusammen. Price galt als einer der einflussreichsten Sänger traditioneller Countrymusik in den 1950er-, 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren. Er feierte mehr als 100 Hits.

Listen to his take on Willie Nelson’s «Night Life» from 1968. Not only does the track feature some absolutely sick steel from the great Buddy Emmons («There ain’t but one steel player, and that’s Buddy Emmons,» Ray told me), but Ray’s vocal is just off the charts: jazzy, loungy, scaling heights, diving deep, with subtlety and incredible range («I remember an old boy said, ‘you can sing so high even the beagles can’t hear you,’» he once told me.) By the time the song ends, Ray has convincingly transformed the character from a «what the hell» ne’er do well to the deeply sad, lonely, regretful, emotional wreck one imagines Willie Nelson had in mind when he wrote it.

Asked to name his favorite recording of his career, Price chose Kris Kristofferson’s «For the Good Times,» which begins: «Don’t look so sad, I know it’s over / But life goes on and this old world will keep on turning / Let’s just be glad, we had some time to spend together.»
