Dale defined surf music as «that rumbling and all that stuff like that they associated the heavy Dick Dale staccato… it sounded like the barrel of a goddamn wave» in an interview with Surfer.

Dale’s self-released records with his band the Deltones led the way for countless other acts – the Chantays, the Surfaris, Eddie and the Showmen and the Pyramids among them – who emulated his reverb-soaked, «wet» sound and aggressive attack in their own hits.

RIP Dick Dale, ‹King of the Surf Guitar› Passes Away at 81
Born Richard Anthony Monsour, his famous songs, like «Miserlou,» and many others have become part of the American music fabric. Dale created the sound of the surf guitar by working with Middle Eastern music scales applied to a driving beat.

Godfather of surf guitar
On the track Misirlou, Dale transformed the traditional Greek folk song into a sped-up, one-string performance, which became a national sensation after Dale performed it on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1962. In 1994, Quentin Tarantino used it as the opening music for Pulp Fiction.
