Die am 18. Dezember 1961 als Angela Laverne Brown in Columbia (South Carolina) geborene US-amerikanische Hip-Hop-, R&B- und Soulsängerin Angie Stone (Bild) ist am 1. März 2025 in Montgomery (Alabama) gestorben. Bekanntheit erlangte Stone erstmals in den frühen 1980er-Jahren als Mitglied der Hip-Hop-Gruppe The Sequence. Die Band galt als eine der ersten weiblichen Gruppen ihres Genres und konnte im Jahr 1980 mit «Funk You Up» einen Hit landen. Später war Stone Mitglied des R&B-Trios Vertical Hold. Angie Stone, Hip-Hop Pioneer Turned Neo-Soul Singer, Dies at 63
After having success as a member of the Sequence, an early female rap group, she re-emerged in the 1990s as a practitioner of sultry, laid-back R&B.
Alongside musicians like Erykah Badu, Macy Gray and Lauryn Hill, Ms. Stone was part of the neo-soul movement of the late 1990s and 2000s, which blended traditional soul with contemporary R&B, pop and jazz fusion. Her first album, “Black Diamond” (1999), was certified gold, as was her sophomore effort, “Mahogany Soul” (2001).

Member of pioneering all-female hip-hop group the Sequence died in car accident following Alabama concert.
A three-time Grammy nominee, Stone would go on to release 10 studio albums, most recently 2023’s Love Language. The singer collaborated with artists like Prince (2001’s “U Make My Sun Shine“), Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Betty Wright, James Ingram, and Stevie Wonder. Stone also branched out into acting, appearing in films like The Hot Chick, The Fighting Temptations, and Ride Along.
In a video posted on social media a week before her death, Stone said “there’s a big grin on my face” because of her upcoming plans. “Film, television, tours, artists, songwriting,” Stone said. “There’s a lot of projects. We’re getting back in the mix.”

Stone had six top 10 hits on the Adult R&B Airplay chart, including two No. 1s, “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” (1999) and “Baby” (2007). The four other top 10s were “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” (No. 2, 2002), “Brotha” (No. 3, 2002), “More Than a Woman” (No. 4, 2002) and “Sometimes” (No. 7, 2008).

Soul singer Angie Stone dies in a car crash at 63
Stone has been a founding member of groundbreaking female hip-hop trio the Sequence in the late 70s at the age of 16. They scored a hit with Funk You Up, a song that was later sampled by Dr Dre for his single Keep Their Heads Ringin and Bruno Mars in Uptown Funk.
“I think that being the first female rap group to actually come out and have an authentic original rap record is an accomplishment that no one else has been able to top,” she said in 2023.

Soul-Ikone stirbt bei Autounfall
Einst wurde sie als «neue Königin des Soul» gefeiert. Ihren letzten Auftritt hatte sie bei einer Karnevalsveranstaltung. Bei der anschliessenden Weiterfahrt kam es Berichten zufolge zu einem Unglück. Ihr Auftritt sei «phänomenal» gewesen, schrieben die Veranstalter bei Instagram. «Ihr Talent zog alle Anwesenden in ihren Bann, und ihre Anwesenheit verlieh der Veranstaltung eine besondere Note», hiess es. «Niemals hätten wir uns vorstellen können, dass es das letzte Mal sein würde, dass wir die Ehre haben würden, sie auftreten zu sehen.»
