Die am 14. April 1932 als Loretta Webb in Butcher Hollow (Johnson County, Kentucky) geborene US-amerikanische Countrysängerin und Songwriterin Loretta Lynn (Bild) ist am 4. Oktober 2022 in Humphrey County (Tennessee) gestorben. Sie gehörte in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren zu den weltweit erfolgreichsten und einflussreichsten Interpretinnen ihres Genres. Zwischen 1960 und 2000 gelangen ihr annähernd 80 Hits in den US-amerikanischen Country-Charts. Lynn wurde 17-mal für den Grammy nominiert und dreimal ausgezeichnet. Darüber hinaus wurde sie auch für ihr Lebenswerk geehrt. Laut den Gold- und Platin-Auszeichnungen der RIAA hat Lynn über vier Millionen Schallplatten alleine in den USA verkauft. (*)

Lynn scored hits with fiery songs like «Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind)» and «You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man),» which topped the country charts in 1966 and made her the first female country singer to write a No. 1 hit.

Her songs recounted family history, skewered lousy husbands and commiserated with women, wives and mothers everywhere. Her tell-it-like-it-is style saw tracks such as «Rated X» and «The Pill» banned from radio, even as they became beloved classics.

 «I wasn’t the first woman in country music,» Lynn told Esquire in 2007. «I was just the first one to stand up there and say what I thought, what life was about.»

Die Nashville-Rebellin, die einen neuen Ton anschlug in der Musikszene

Der amerikanische Rock-Star Jack White von den White Stripes war es, der sie 2004 ins Rampenlicht zurückbrachte. «Van Lear Rose» hiess das Album, von White produziert, das Loretta Lynn erstmals einem jüngeren Publikum bekannt machte. Möglicherweise realisierte dieses nicht einmal, wer diese ältere Dame von 72 Jahren war: die Königin der Country-Musik.
