ZUM TOD DES BRITISCHEN MUSIKPRODUZENTEN UND MUSIKERS DAVID BALL (SOFT CELL / THE GRID)

Der am 3. Mai 1959 in Blackpool (Lancashire) geborene britische Musikproduzent und Musiker David Ball ist am 22. Oktober 2025 in London gestorben. Zusammen mit Marc Almond gründete er im September 1980 die Musikgruppe Soft Cell. Zu ihren grossen Erfolgen gehört «Tainted Love» (1981). Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Gini Ball und Marc Almond wirkte Ball 1982 auch an der ersten LP der britischen Industrial-Band Psychic TV mit. Ball bildete zusammen mit Richard Norris die Technogruppe The Grid, die mit dem Millionenhit «Swamp Thing» erfolgreich wurde. Ball arbeite weiter mit Künstlern wie B-52s, Depeche Mode, Man Parrish, Client, Jackie Chan oder Andy Smith von Portishead und Misty Woods von JuJu Babies zusammen. Die Aufnahmen zum neuen Album «Danceteria» mit Marc Almond waren nach dessen Angaben wenige Tage vor Balls Tod beendet worden. Das Erscheinen des Albums wurde für 2026 angekündigt. A tribute to David James Ball

Electronic music pioneer Dave Ball, one half of groundbreaking electronic music duo Soft Cell and successful acid house act The Grid, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his London home on Wednesday 22nd October. He was 66.

Singer Marc Almond, Dave’s musical collaborator of 46 years and Soft Cell bandmate, leads the tributes, describing Dave as a “wonderfully brilliant musical genius”. What turns out to be Dave’s final appearance with the band came only weeks ago at the Rewind Festival in Henley-on-Thames, where Soft Cell headlined in front of over 20,000 fans.

With Tainted Love, Soft Cell set a template for 80s synth-pop duos: The flamboyant frontman paired with an unassuming keyboard technician.

Dave Ball (…) was that musical force, creating ominous, polyphonic soundscapes to match Marc Almond’s lyrics about X-rated movies and sado-masochism.

Marc Almond Reveals Soft Cell Finished New Album Days Before Dave Ball’s Death

Almond and Ball performed together for nearly 50 years, as the duo formed in 1978. “I wish he could have stayed on to celebrate 50 years in a couple of years time. He will always be loved by fans who loved his music,” Almond said of his longtime bandmate.

Dann kann alles gut werden

Noch im August spielte er umjubelte Konzerte mit seinem Freund Marc Almond, sie arbeiteten an einem neuen Album. Nun ist der große Künstler David Ball mit nur 66 Jahren gestorben.

Der Herzschlag klingt, als würde ein Roboter vor Sehnsucht kollabieren. Es zischt, dröhnt und klöppelt in diesem Lied. Der Klang erzählt von der Liebe in Zeiten der fortgeschrittenen Industrialisierung, von der kalten, beschädigten Liebe.

Und trotzdem hat „Tainted Love“, dieser Song, der Ende 1981 zwei Wochen lang auf Platz eins der deutschen Musikcharts stand (buchstäblich zwischen Frank Zanders Hamstern und Gottlieb Wendehals), etwas ungeheuer Umarmendes.

Mit „Tainted Love“ in den Pop-Olymp

„Tainted Love“ wurde ein Überhit, ein Evergreen, und Ball erinnerte sich im „Guardian“ daran, wie er und Almond zwar in einer kleinen, heruntergekommenen Sozialwohnung im sowieso heruntergekommenen Leeds lebten, aber schon bald mit der Concorde durch die Gegend geflogen wurden. Ball sorgte fortan für die Klangkörper der Soft-Cell-Stücke, die zwar von Almond und seiner Stimme dominiert wurden, aber ihren wahren und melancholischen Pop-Dreh erst durch Ball bekamen.

Synthie-Pop für den Underground

Ein Sänger und ein Sound-Tüftler. Diese musikalische Zweierbeziehung hat sich im Synthie-Pop bewährt: bei Depeche Mode, bei Yello und für kurze Zeit auch bei Soft Cell. Ende der siebziger Jahre hatten sich die beiden Briten Marc Almond und Dave Ball am Polytechnikum in Leeds kennengelernt. Und bald begannen sie, gemeinsam Musik zu machen.
