Juni 2024 in New York City gestorben. Er war vor allem unter den Namen James Chance und James White bekannt und war eine Schlüsselfigur in den Musikformen No Wave, Punk-Jazz, Avant-Punk und Dance-Punk. Er spielte ab Mitte der 1970er-Jahre in Bands wie Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, James Chance and the Contortions, James White and the Blacks, The Flaming Demonics, James Chance & the Sardonic Symphonics und James Chance and Terminal City.

Musician James Chance, Who Blended Punk Rock Aggression with Funk and Free Jazz Expression, Has Died At Age 71
James Chance, the singer, saxophonist, bandleader and composer who in the late 1970s emerged from New York’s «No Wave» scene to embody the genre known as «punk funk,» died today at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in New York. His death was announced by his brother David Siegfried of Chicago, who did not specify a cause of death but noted that the musician’s health had been in decline for several years. His final live performance is believed to have taken place in March 2019 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Chance epitomized the «No Wave»-era Downtown New York of the late 1970s and early 1980s with a sound and swagger that combined jazz, punk and funk. With his chiseled features, white tux and intensely confrontational stage presence — he would literally start fights with audience members, one of whom, according to legend, was veteran music critic Robert Christgau — for a time Chance was a leading light of that scene, which existed on the fringe of the more-popular CBGB-spawned new wave coterie that included Blondie, Talking Heads, the Ramones and others.

Chance’s output slowed in the 1980s, but a 2001 Contortions reunion prompted sporadic tours (and some financial disputes with ex-bandmates) as the band’s legend and influence grew.
Upon the news of his death, artists as disparate as Otomo Yoshihide, Blondie’s Chris Stein, and Kid Congo Powers paid tribute, the last writing that he first saw the Contortions in 1978 at CBGB. «A new world opened up to me that day,» he said. «Earth shattering. Amazing style, both musical and sartorial.»

In 1975, Chance moved to New York, where he officially began using his stage name, and a year later formed the influential group Teenage Jesus and the Jerks with singer Lydia Lunch. In 1977, after studying with saxophonist David Murray, he formed the first version of the Contortions. The group released its debut album, Buy, in 1979. Chance was known for his confrontational stage presence and known to start fights with members of the crowd.

Niemand klang so sehr nach New York wie er. Das heißt: nach dem New York, wie es sich die Popkultur Anfang der 1980er-Jahre vorstellte. Nach Straßenkriminalität und Loft-Partys, nach schnellen Drogen und weißem Rauschen. Und wilden Saxofonen natürlich. Nach der Synthese von Freejazz (in der schroffen Spielart von Ornette Coleman, nicht der hymnischen Spiritualität von John Coltrane) und Punk (respektive New Wave), die ab 1977 in der Luft lag. James Siegfried aus Milwaukee, 1975 nach New York gezogen, vollzog sie.
