Der am 17. Juli 1935 in Saint John (New Brunswick, Kanada) geborene kanadische Theater- und Filmschauspieler Donald Sutherland (Bild) ist am 20. Juni 2024 in Miami (Florida, USA) gestorben. Ab den 1970er-Jahren war er in mehreren Filmklassikern in profilierten Rollen zu sehen. 2018 wurde ihm der Ehrenoscar zuerkannt. Sutherland galt als einer der wandlungsfähigsten Schauspieler Hollywoods. Sein Schaffen für Film und Fernsehen umfasst mehr als 190 Produktionen. Seine Leidenschaft für das Theater gab er trotz seiner Kinoerfolge nie auf. Zuletzt stand er für «Enigmatic Variations» im Londoner Savoy Theatre auf der Bühne. (*)

Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that.

Known for his easily identifiable baritone, Sutherland starred in a multitude of recognizable and memorable films, including 1980’s Ordinary People, 1991’s JFK, 1998’s Without Limits and the Hunger Games franchise. Man muss seine Regisseure hochschätzen, wenn man die eigenen Kinder nach ihnen benennt. Alle vier Söhne von Donald Sutherland tragen die Namen von Filmemachern, mit denen er einmal zusammengearbeitet hat. Die Beziehung zu seinen Regisseuren hatte für Sutherland etwas Leidenschaftliches, Intimes, wie eine Affäre, die irgendwann, egal, wie gut man sich versteht, schmerzlich zu Ende geht.
