We are deeply and profoundly saddened to announce the untimely passing of keyboard legend Dave Greenfield on the evening of 3rd May 2020. Following a stay in hospital for heart problems, Dave tested positive for the Covid-19 virus last Sunday but he sadly lost his battle last night. Dave had been an ever present in the band since joining in late 1975 and his keyboard wizardry was world-renowned over his 45 year career in The Stranglers. Dave was a lovable, friendly and eccentric character who always had time to chat.

Stranglers› keyboardist Dave Greenfield dies after contracting Covid-19
A long-standing member of the influential punk band, Greenfield (…) was known for his distinctive sound and playing style, using instruments such as the harpsichord and Hammond electric organ.
He wrote the piece of music that would become Golden Brown. His bandmates initially discarded the song and did not consider it a potential single, but once released it became their biggest hit, eventually winning the band an Ivor Novello award.

In 1983, while the Stranglers were still active, Greenfield collaborated with the band’s Jean-Jacques «JJ» Burnel on an album called Fire & Water (Ecoutez Vos Murs). On the Stranglers› website, Burnel called Greenfield a «musical genius» and wrote, «All of us in the worldwide Stranglers› family grieve and send our sincerest condolences to [Greenfield’s wife] Pam.»

Greenfield played on well-loved tracks including Golden Brown, Peaches and No More Heroes.
Critics compared his sound to that of Ray Manzarek from the Doors, who also used «rapid arpeggios» to create dynamism in his music.

Indeed, simply having a keyboardist at all was unusual for punk bands of the time, but Greenfield’s distinctive use of organ and synthesizers would have set the band apart in any rock era. The Stranglers experimented with an array of different styles over the years and have remained active since their inception, even having to postpone their farewell tour due to the pandemic.
